A dictator rewriting history will never make America great again

No more than a fantasy economy will make America prosperous again.

The truth is often uncomfortable, and it's understandable why one might prefer to deny it. Take a listen to Tim Wise unravel that awkward truth.

Colonial powers have sought profit from the suffering of others for generations. It’s how modern economies were built. Slavery and oppression are part of American history from which it should have learned lessons, but it chose not to.

Instead, politicians believe the truth will disappear as if the cruelty and abuse never took place. They just need to erase it from museums and remove books documenting it from schools. It takes a special kind of fool to believe that.

We are all the product of our history, and if we are to create a better tomorrow, we must learn from the past and not continue to repeat our mistakes.

What is happening in America today is not making America great; it’s making America small, cruel, intolerant and self-obsessed. The world does not see strength; it sees a diminished society with an inability to reconcile its past and build a better future for its people.

Our history should serve as our roadmap to redemption; it should be the foundation on which we learn not to repeat the mistakes of the past. There is no future in discrimination, intolerance and self-imposed isolationism. Therein lay the road to ruin.

There is no future if that future is built on a tapestry of lies, deception, the denial of freedom of expression, and the weaponisation of the law to hunt manufactured enemies of the state. Enemies whose only crime is to tell the truth.

The American experiment was never created to establish a white Christian nation where the bastardisation of the Bible and the Constitution would be used to construct a racist, intolerant promised land ruled by rich white men, in which women are mere handmaidens.

History once written is read only; there is no delete button. Nobody has the right to rewrite it in their own image and to erase the sins of those who came before. America’s strength and prosperity have been built on the blood, sweat, and tears of the oppressed. It is they who should receive our respect and admiration, not their owners who exploited their labour through violence and cruelty.

The sacrifice of far too many on battlefields at home and on far distant lands provided a land of opportunity—a land which should be for the benefit of the many, not the few. However, a small number of the beneficiaries of the wealth generated from exploitation and abuse have become the new 21st-century digital plantation owners.

Slavery never died; it just pulled on a new suit. It morphed into an AI-driven economic reincarnation, where people have been convinced to believe that their economic decline is the fault not of the rich, but of immigrants seeking a better life, the poor and the vulnerable.

There can be no justification for removing the healthcare of 17 million Americans and denying nutrition to food-insecure children and families in the alleged most prosperous country on earth.

Deliberately imposed poverty and deprivation in a developed economy are a deliberate choice, not an inevitable consequence. A choice made by those in power to worship at the altar of greed at the expense of those they exploit and have abandoned. Immigrants are not the cause of what is a failing economy; they are victims of political failure seeking someone to blame.

Society is not weakened by diversity; it is strengthened. Illegal immigration is a byproduct of deliberate failed social policy that has delivered a cheap labour pool and, at the same time, handed Republicans a political weapon. Not a bad outcome considering they provide $97 billion in annual state and payroll taxes while receiving zero benefit from their contribution—the most profitable political scapegoats in US history.

Trump can deny the truth, but eventually that truth will come knocking on the door, and that moment IS approaching. When it arrives, there will be nowhere to hide as his political allies throw him under the bus, claiming they were also his victims who were just following orders.
