I always read your messages with Care as they are carefully crafted but filled to the brim with facts that must be studied closely. I really appreciate the graphic today showing the capitalisation of the largest stocks. I have traveled in the Scandinavian countries and seen first hand the first world lifestyle and contentment of the citizenry. But like most cases of semi perfect results in most very broad endeavors and economies, they started that way over the long haul and never really knew that they were special. How do we who have as top management (governmental control by the very rich oligarchs with all the real power) make the switch that we so desperately need as you point out so often. It is nearly always impossible to copy utopia when you didn't start along the path early on. Those in power will try every evil way to keep it even though as you so well point out in this article that they would not be destroyed if the wealth were shared more equally. I fear that if some reversion to the mean does not occur, ther will be anarchy and revolution. Trump has opened a giant window into the unjust world you so well describe. Thank you for continuing to show us the way, even though I don't have much hope that the super strong and wealthy will ever be convinced.

Larry, thank you for contributing to this important conversation, and thanks for your kind words. I don’t think for one moment that anyone would have either the will or the strength to address what I discuss in this piece.

I find these exercises rather cathartic because this is about me highlighting for my own peace of mind, that I mapped out a potential solution that in reality is not punitive, but rather a conscience prick given the impact on those whose shoulders the burden would fall, would not feel a thing.

It’s about people needing to understand that fair taxes are not punitive. They are a societal obligation in a democracy. I understand it’s a pipe dream to expect the greedy to do the right thing, but that’s doesn’t mean the truth should not be spoken. - Martin

Very easy to understand. The only impediment to implementation is greed in the upper 10%.

I love seeing Trump supporters here on Substack. Maybe some of them will pay attention and pull their heads out of their donkeys.

IN NOVEMBER VOTE LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT! BECAUSE IT DOES! TRUMP AND MAGA NAZIS ARE DESTROYING THIS COUNTRY TO ENRICH THEMSELVES AND THEIR CRONIES AND TAKING IT FROM THE WORKING RETIRED AND POOR! STRIPPING LAWFUL PROTECTIONS AND DOING AWAY WITH THE PROCEDURES TO REDRESS OUR VALID ISSUES! WHEN IT'S GONE IT'S GONE FOREVER!

Did you crunch all these numbers ? I think you are working overtime Martin . Yes it sounds like a very viable option … ( remember I passed Econ 101 by a hair 😂😂😂)

maybe you should send this directly to Elizabeth Warren … she has a plan for a wealth tax as well . I’m sure she’d like to hear from you .

I had a little help with an on device AI I built to do fiscal analysis, then I spent hours double checking the output as it’s a new addition to my research armoury. I’m pleased to report I found no errors, which I have to admit did surprise me.

There’s no question it’s viable, it’s about peeling back the layers of misdirection and propaganda. - Martin

Yes a hell of a lot of propaganda. Now that some of the democratic socialists are making headway in the primaries… the Republican Party is pushing the communism narrative… we are being invaded . OMG . Run run run … the communists are destroying our country. It’s such a farcical idea but Ted Cruz is spouting his toxic rhetoric.

If trump paid taxes on that 2 billion he made last year, how much would that be?

cindee68's avatar

Zero because he cheats on his taxes and pays someone like Epstein to hide his income. And then immunized himself against IRS audits.

Rho Khanna and Bernie Sanders have introduced a wealth tax bill.

Sadly I fear there is only one dimwit in this conversation. But that’s the beauty of living in a democracy, I defend your right to be an idiot.

Did you by chance attend Trump University to study economics?

Cal, while you were snoozing the rules were changed. Time to wake up and quit preaching like an Oligarch.

I don’t think that Norway is considered to be communist or Marxist and the population is enjoying many more benefits than we are.

We're not going bankrupt but our national debt keeps rising thanks to Republicans and their big bills, giving enormous tax breaks to oligarchs then borrow to pay the bills. Essentially Socialism for the wealthy at the expense of the bottom 90% of our population. Those are the new rules Cal.

Your point is what? This is a long term planning issue not a financial crisis. It does not have trillions in debt to finance this year at high interest rates.

They have the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world containing $2.2 trillion dollars. They can fund free education, healthcare and childcare just on profits from the investment of that fund.

Debt to GDP is 54% compared to the US at 124.6%
