The key to defeating Trump? Mass non-cooperation | Mark Engler and Paul Engler

The key to defeating Trump? Mass non-cooperation | Mark Engler and Paul Engler

The following are excerpts from this article.

“The extraordinary level of grassroots solidarity and creative resistance in anti-ICE protests in Minnesota has given people a new appreciation for the power that mass non-cooperation can have in resisting the Trump administration’s drive toward authoritarianism. And it has created an awareness of why such action is clearly needed.”

Early in Trump’s second term, an array of mainstream critics expressed skepticism about the value of continued protests in the streets. They invested their faith in institutions such as Congress and the courts. But as these institutions – along with law firms, universities and the business community – have each caved in to the administration’s demands and proven themselves unwilling to catalyze an ardent defense of democracy, it has been left to the people themselves to do this essential work.

Mainstream political thinking in the US sees power as “monolithic,” resting in the hands of senators, generals, billionaires, presidents and CEOs. From that vantage point, the options for opposing a rogue administration seem desperately thin: wait for elections, file a lawsuit, hope for some unforeseen maneuver by elites. This worldview breeds despair. One prominent Democratic party consultant even advised that the best course for progressives is simply to “roll over and play dead”.

Those immersed in social movements look at the process of change in a different way than political insiders do. Instead of subscribing to the monolithic view of power, they hold a social view of power, which understands that those in positions of authority are dependent upon the cooperation and support of the governed.

Now, as then, the list of methods is best seen as an invitation to creativity, reminding organizers they have many tools in their collective toolbox – each with distinctive properties and powers. The potential of civil resistance is not just in holding large demonstrations. It is in drawing from a vast array of strikes, boycotts, noncooperation tactics and artistic protest. And it is in coming up with innovative forms of creative resistance that may never have been seen before.”

To this writer - you re the first writer to recognize - and state - that the way we have always done things to make change - is not and will not work - and there are two reasons for that.

#1.) is -- the present US Military Leadership is the means through which this war is being executed.

Had they all, both recently retired, and present-day - honored the Oath of Allegiance each one of them swore to when receiving their Commission as an Officer in the US Military - this present this war would never have happened.

Why - because that Oath of Allegiance is to the US Constitution alone.

It's not to any President.

It's not to any Government.

And it sure as hell isn't to follow illegal orders or decisions leading to them issuing illegal orders to the Military under their command - which is the case everyday now.

They have a dirty little secret: -- there is no Civil Law or Military Regulation that commands them to follow any order.

In fact UCMJ Articles 90 and 92 specifically state that everyone in the US Military - has the duty to make up his or hers own mind - no JAG opinion is mention - as to the legality of any order.

That was the focus on the recent video put out by some Vets in the US Senate and House --

but the message was left incomplete.

It left out the part about present day Offices honoring their Oaths as Officers - and fighting the enemy -- the domestic enemy -they have obviously joined.

The present US Military Leadership needs to have it made clear to them, under no uncertain terms; that they are to; as per their sworn Oath of Allegiance to fight the enemy that is "domestically located":

--- remove this duly elected, but now totally illegal President / each and every duly elected but now illegal Politician in both the US House / US Senate / and US Supreme Court / and every "Appointee" by this illegal Government - by whatever means necessary.

These people, by both Civil and UCMJ stated definition - are Traitors to the Constitution and to this Country that they - as US Citizens - owe their allegiance to "first" - not to their Political Party or their "Leader".

They, and the voter in their political party, who have been for decades now, been voting to bring harm to the Constitution are, again by legal definition; guilty of Treason against the Constitution by voting bringing harm to it - and thus to "the other peoples" living under it's protection.

And that brings up item #2.

The 18 year young men and women of this country that witnessed this President descending his golden escalator prior to the 2016 election - really know nothing of the older / established way of life in the US - which true Conservative beliefs and ways of living together for the common good of this Country, among others with the same aim - existed.

Now, a good portion of them; most around 28: because of Covid, it's aftermath, and the disastrous upheaval caused by this President's first term - have joined in believing in the ideologies of what is known "Modern Conservatism -- which, when compared to a former Government that held the same ideologies - no difference can be found between those ideologies - they ae the same.

This is an overlooked and growing condition in this country - because that other Government - was the Third Reich Nazi Government under Dictator Adolph Hitler.

This was pointed out this morning on MSNOW in a discussion with one of the leaders of "The Bulwark" - who basically said that this present Republican Party Government, led by Donald Trump - is grooming the next addition of Nazi foot-soldiers and Gestapo - for here: - in the US: - to continue what they are doing now.

And that makes facing up to the total situation - paramount - immediately.

I agree that the US under different presidents have not understood the culture of those they invade. They hear “communist”or religious zealot and think it has to be put down by American thinking and values ( as they were back then). Trump plays a power game and thinks every thought he has is a win in his deranged mind.

He has no diplomatic skills and poor communication skills and runs on gaining headlines.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment that the United States has unnecessarily and naively done all of the heavy lifting with regard to our standing with NATO and Europe. In exchange for not having to fight the Russians in Paramus or Virginia Beach, we have chosen for the past many decades to provide exceptional, non binary, non conditional assistance to those countries who are in fact on the beachhead, whose citizens, economies and infrastructure are at the greatest risk. Asking the EU and UK to step it up is okay, but in the long run, it has been the United States that has had the most to gain from a secure Europe. The wars we helped start, has led to massive immigration issues for those countries in Europe, those same wars our Allies have stood with us to fight the wars we started. Asking Estonia or Denmark to contribute what would amount to most of their national GDP in order to make the current administration not threaten them with hostile take overs of their sovereignty and sovereign territory is paramount to declaring a war of usury, blackmail and extortion. Those investments we were making in Europe with our Allies there were just that: Investments. Harry S., Ike, Reagan, all the way through Obama and Biden understood that. To normalize what this president says in his toddler speak explanations of what amounts to his world view serves no one well. Every utterance from him and his supporters are confessions as to their void of moral intellect and depravity of conscience in the name of power and wealth. It all started with 'owning the libs' now it's about making this country unrecognizable. If Iran has half the gumption that Ukraine has, this administration will be about as effective as has Russia. And the US electorate has itself to blame.

There are days that for all that selected this to come so many cannot comprehend as to why ..

Scott McKie's avatar

TJ -- I would offer that those people are very well aware of what they voted for - because the voting records show that they have been voting for "what is being attempted to take place" - for decades.

The only difference now is that "...they're personal sacred cow - their personal financial situation - is getting gored..." - and they don't like it.

This is because they've been voting all this time, for "their politicians" to cause all of the crap to fall on "the other guy" not them and their kind.

Think about it -- outside of the catchall "...for the American People..." have you ever heard any of them speak about something other than "money" - or speak about doing something "for the common good of this Country and the other peoples in it...?

Those words are voted for and spoken of by "the other peoples" - not them.

TJ's avatar

Thank you for the perspective. It’s an incredible feeling that people are so incredibly ignorant..

Scott McKie's avatar

Hi TJ -- I would offer that you consider this as far as people voting the way that they do - as I feel you are being way too generaous.

Think about it for a sec.

Do you feel that when you vote for something especially on the national level - you just throw a dart at the target on the wall?

I would hope not.

Part of being a citizen in this Country, i.e., the way things were set up and intended was - you keep yourself educated and up to date as to the person running for office and the subject to be voted on - and then cast your vote.

For a tremendous part of the present and recent past Republican Party voters - I have found it's a game of either I won't vote for anything any Democrat puts forward - or just plain "gotcha".

Also - have you, in the recent, or far past - ever heard of a Republican putting anything forward - that was for the common good of this Country?

No - it's always about cutting funding or taxes -- or now spending money to throw people out of this Country -that they don't like.

They have turned themselves into a clique, or club - and if you're not like them -- because they have theirs - you can get yours.

It's called "Modern Conservatism".

It's insidious and extremely dangerous to "the rest of us" - because, as found in their new Bible, Project 2025 and now 2026 - as there is no longer anything Christian about them -- it) their Modern Conservatism is a page fo page, carbon copy of the "playbook" for the Third Reich Nazi Party Member's backed Government under Adolph Hitler - now being backed totally by our US Military Leadership goose-stepping to whatever THE LEADER wants.

It took me awhile to find this piece but found it interesting in 2025 when people vote against their own self interests.

Scott McKie's avatar

Hi TJ -- that was a very interesting article, and it does a good job of delineated the "what" concerning these people, but it didn't state anything about the "why" - these people have done what they've done.

As I wrote earlier - I lived within The Nazi -- in Germany.

It was seven "ideologies" that The Nazi took to themselves and which are hee now.

I'll let you be the judge if I am right - because they were / are:

1.) "Totalitarianism" -- where THE PARTY controls THE GOVERNMENT while punishing their political enemies; and eliminating any descent from anyone;

2.) "Dictatorship" -- where THE LEADER controls absolutely everything;

3.) "Limiting Persona Freedom" -- where THE COURT and THE GOVERNMENT take away personal freedoms without cause or recourse;

4.) "Xenophobia" -- perpetuating the White / Nordic Race Heritage - while eliminating all others as being "inferior";

5.) "Nationalism" -- "rebuilding the Country - because it had been persecuted against by all other nations;

6.) "Loyalty" -- where every PARTY MEMBER swears total loyalty to THE LEADER as THE PARTY LEADER ---- and then to the Country - and;

7.) "Sovereign Economy" -- where THE GOVERNMENT uses everything for it's "war needs" - "economic" and "otherwise.

I leave it to you to decided if there is anything missing here from the Trump Nazi Evangelical MAGA Party member or so-called Republican Party voter or politician.

And I just watched another retired US ARMY Brig. General being interviewed on CNN - imploring the public to demonstrate against what Pete Hegseth had done today - with not a thought about the fact that he swore in is Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution - to fight the enemy, foreign and domestic - which every one of these people have chosen to not only dishonor themselves by their lack of guts - but cause further harm to the Constitution and they Country they swore to protect.

TJ's avatar

Scott do not disagree with any of your assessments as to why and agree with the “seven ideologies”. Today started to watch some of the CPAC speakers. The “Fear Mongering” is such a part of this platform. Caught a Newsmax host Carl Higbie (think it’s his name) on stage saying he started carrying a gun to his NYC office because of Zohran Mamdani because New York City has elected a “communist, socialist, Islamist jihadist” - Good lord could hear the audience agreeing with this statement. Fear what a motivator..

Stay safe and healthy. Will be out and about for No Kings tomorrow..

I wonder if I might convince, how wrong you are to think that Europe hasn’t paid their way in NATO.

1) America should pay more, due to the percentage of American bases in Europe compared to European bases in America. America has roughly 90,000 personnel over 40 American-only bases.

2) keeping 1 in mind: America had long been an aggressive force in the Middle East. To have its bases there had always been their preference.

America paid their way into Europe, we’re happy to do so, and Europe knows it.

3) Taking into consideration the high number of arms sales, from America coming into Europe, since 1949 (When NATO was formed), it’s fair to say Europe has spent far more with America, directly contributing to the American GDP while also allowing the expansion of American weapons-tech into our own security sphere.

If you add together the European GDP totals and compare it to the American in terms of averages GDP since 1949, you’ll find the math when taking points 1,2,and 3 into consideration are not remarkably different.

A side note: now that America has turned to shit, it’ll cost Europe far more than if we had been forced to equal Americas input, simply to pivot (recalibrate).

I feel I’m giving you a hard time lately; I just can’t seem get beyond some of your initial comments to get to the valuable information beyond.

Sorry.

Additional note:

I have since read this whole piece, and now feel compelled to ask: why did you start by saying you agree with Trump, then offer reasons to disagree on budgets entirely without stating any conclusion?

I almost didn’t read it. Also, even though you commented on the counter argument, because you didn’t round up I still disagree with you.

The point is that Trump is an aggressor and is currently using his NATO position for war, America has always been thus, and people are starting to wake up.

Wonder how many Trump/US analogies can/ will be made to Napoleon’s “Battle of Waterloo”?

‘Napoleon Bonaparte's defeat at the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815, marked the 🔹end of his rule and the Napoleonic Wars, leading to his 🔹abdication and 🔹exile to Saint Helena.

This battle also solidified the power of the Seventh Coalition, 🔹restoring monarchies in Europe and establishing a 🔹balance of power that would influence European politics for decades.”

Our deteriorating relationship with Canada has been one of the saddest outcomes of this miserable administration. I’m hoping when he’s gone we will gain your trust back!

Bonnie Godinez's avatar

Susan , you are so right in every aspect of your comments. As an American, I am so very sorry for the betrayal that Canada has endured by this administration. I personally want to apologize to all Canadians for the abhorrent behavior of this administration. It’s both embarrassing and disgraceful that we have such a leader who shows such disdain for true allies . I am deeply disturbed that the USA has become such a shallow , arrogant and corrupt place at this time in history . But keep the faith that things will change. Keep hope alive .

Simon Sez's avatar

Susan, the people of US love and respect Canada. We are the same unlucky, as the whole planet, to put up with a psychopath that thinks he is smart. He is an imbecile, and there is nothing to do about it as long as he has a gang of sycophants around him. They empower and advise him to do what they want, exactly because he can be so easy manipulated by anyone, with flattery and gifts. We know it, and we act as we can for now, hoping to get rid of him in elections. Personally, I am afraid that his billionaire friends will buy again the votes to keep him in power.

Even the military is on his side, following his illegal orders by killing civilians without real reason. We have a fascist government that usurped the power by lying and looting this country and us. We know it well. And, if there is any American that does not understand this by now, they should have a mental examination.
