Domestic clothing manufacturing that was once done in this country with pride, has all but been shifted to overseas cheap labor. How about .25 cent per hour labor in Ethiopia building Nike shoes, for instance? In just my own lifetime, home sewing has gone from an essential home skill to have to virtually no one having these skills anymore!

Rachel, so true about home sewing. But sewing machines are still available and anyone with interest can quickly learn. As a lifetime sewer myself (aged 76) I just purchased a new one. But better still, my children and grandchildren have all been in awe of my sewing and crocheting skills over the years and have all picked up some of them - males and females alike. Short story is they are well equipped to be self-sufficient in that area of life going forward.

A lesson in neoliberalism 101, thx. Robert Reich estimates 80 trillion $ cut from American work into the new generation of robber barons. So no wonder they feel left out and behind. George Monbiot wrote in 2024, Invisible Doctrine The Secret History of Neoliberalism. Short, sweet and an expose of Reaganomics and Thatcherism.

And it will get worse.

Trump & MAGA are depraved & totally insane! They must be stopped!

This is a very good article. I am currently writing a book on the history of trade and tariffs and how the Trump Administration has severely tarnished our global trade network and reputation. Your article corroborates my book.

Thank you Peter, good to hear you and I are on the same page. Obviously I have to focus on the broader picture, but it’s a fascinating area of research. - Martin

Sadly that we have fallen so far in such a short time … but I strongly agree …. This damage will take 10 - 20 years to repair . And that’s being very hopeful. The Allies are going to seek a more independent and self serving path , more self reliant and cohesive… we have shown them we are unreliable. Great insight and article Martin .

Cheers Bonnie, have a great weekend.

Hi Martin - a thought.

I'm not a one trick pony - but there is a correlation to be examined here - and it is this.

What would it take for you to connect the dots - that there are identifiable MAGA voters that are having their favorite ox gored with all of this.

These are the people that gleefully drank the cool-aid Trump was delivering up - "...that they would be the recipients..." of whatever sick fantasy his sick brain was coming up per speech.

Now -- their favorite ox is being gored - because "...the shiny city on the hill...", starting with "Ronny Ray Gun -- was a total myth: and they had bought in - "hook-line-and-sinker".

"Geopolitical interactions" has been on-going since homo-sapiens found/ met each other -- so I don't think that it is in peril - just being misused, which "kind-a" punches a hole in your "it's too late" scenario - but it has been injured.

The real danger is, like I wrote to you - what if the US Military Leadership doesn't end this, and a real war starts -- all based on US based corporate and personal "Greed".

We're not playing with Muskets; or even M1 Carbines here.

The Politicians that are aiding and abetting this latest charade with Iran, which is just another Greed based maneuver, backed by the same Greed based individuals - orchestrated by THEIR LEADER - are asleep at the switch as to the reality they have produced via their actions.

So please consider getting into the weeds on this and get the facts out.

Bravo! Excellent article! Spot on! Having studied in China, I am always sad to return to the US. It’s too expensive, not safe, and a decade behind China in technology and social welfare.

Truth Matters's avatar

Thank you Dorie, I appreciate your kind words. People have for too long assumed through arrogance that China can be managed. It’s a pipe dream. - Martin
