There's an unfathomable disconnect at the moment between Dem leadership and Dem voters. A disconnect that we must extirpate if our country's gonna emerge from this chaos in one piece.

You are absolutely correct

Jasmine Crockett and Greg Casar are my hope. Unfortunately, since Jasmine is a female/black the dumb will not take a look at her but she is GREAT leader! πŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌ that people need to vote for these two Texas Leaders!

Joe Blow's avatar

There is no real leadership coming from the so called current leaders aka Schummer, Jeffries, Booker. The cave on the budget should have been a wake up call for everyday Americans. Bernie and AOC embody the leadership we need. Certainly AOC can carry the torch but who can go with her?

Christine Knowles's avatar

As a life long Dem, I am so disgusted with my party. Not only us there no leadership from the "leaders", very few Dems are even pushing back and/or speaking out. There are a few. Are many Washington Dems complicit in the hijacking of our country? Really not a conspiracy theorist but I'm hearing nothing but crickets from most of my party. Why is that???

Totally agree. I am afraid that Schumer is going to cave on the upcoming debate to fund the government and not ask for any concessions from the Republicans to earn Dem votes. He really needs to be replaced with someone who is a fighter (like, dare I say it, Mitch did). Thanks for your writing about what Democrats need to do.

Love him or hate him (and I loathed him) Mitch McConnell knew how to obstruct in opposition. He was a master of the dark arts.

Shebahlee's avatar

I don’t fear it. I am sure Schumer is going cave. He always does. Big words, but with no follow through.

I give my support to Jasmine Crockett. Truth is on her side, as a black, female, with strong points on history. Her voice, that many people will shy away from. We can Handle The Truth, truth a sword like no other. Those fearing the truth she delivers are afraid to debate, discuss, find grounds to meet on. AOC, is also another, she is not afraid of a good debate & discussion. Family that are republicans say she is a bad choice. Again, republicans are afraid of the debate on gender, race, history of oppression. They don’t want to discuss black history, Chinese history, Spanish history, Mexican history, but white history is okay. There’s the rub. Fear of loosing what they fought for. Not willing to evolve because America is many colors, histories and languages that keep growing. Another is Cory Booker, passion and stamina, strength to march forward and say what needs to be said. He will listen, debate and is strong of character. JB Prizker, with a focus on education, healthcare, infrastructure & a loud voice pushing back on republicans. Those are a few. And of course Gavin Newsom. Big push back through verbal communication on what is wrong with this administration. Parody, trolling Trump. Strong pushback lately, perfect timing.

Please don’t forget SSI when talking about change. Our fixed incomes are also becoming unsustainable do to rising costs. Please don’t put the elderly in the dustbin of history.

Truth Matters's avatar

Certainly not my intention Vickie. I think my wife intention is encapsulated in the need for transformative change.

I agree with every word. Well stated!

Exactly. Americans have short memories. A win can erode to a loss.

As an outsider looking in, spot on!

I really hope a person with a titanium spine comes forward to lead the Democrates back on track.

Unfortunately like you say, money talks. (Read: Corporate donors) Most politicians are bought & paid for by people who's interests do not align with "the common folk".

There needs to be checks & balances put in place to keep "big money interests" out of politics! Oh, & do away with the electoral college!!! 1 person, 1 vote.

Just my 2 nickels worth. (Seeing we no longer have pennies here.)

I'm so glad I took the time to read this post. Thank you so much! I completely agree (except for stuff about H Jeffries which I don't know enough about). I am curious as to what folks are doing to get this point across to our current democrats in office... I for one will send this to my senators and reps in WA state - and strongly encourage them to take notice. Maybe I'll send it - or a version of this - to Schumer too... maybe if his mail is flooded he will pay attention. ? any thoughts?

Truth Matters's avatar

As they say Kerry, you can take a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. Unfortunately politics is a gold rush, they will be paying expensive consultants to tell them what they want to hear. I fear nobody is interested in the uncomfortable truth.

Kerry's avatar

that is a sad truth, I worry that many just accepted the idea that Biden was too old and Kamala didn't have enough time... and somehow don't see that the way things have been done on both sides of the aisle, for the past 20-30 years has led us to this moment - unfortunately, the young voters are tired of voting for the lesser of two evils, and are looking for leaders who will work for them - like Bernie Sanders does. I think David Hogg, Leaders We Deserve, and the Working Families Party have a chance at chipping away at the old guard. I regularly read comments from older folk like myself who agree with me that it's time to let the younger generations have their say... goodness knows they've been let down by 'business as usual'. Anat Shenker Osorio is a smart political consultant and I've heard her talk about the way questions are worded which leads to erroneous conclusions, among other things. Sadly though, it's possible that the best outcomes will only happen when my generation dies off... and then I hope it's not too late.

As always when I read Martin's articles he is always on the money. As an Australian who has compared Australia and the UK political systems and political issues which are no different that those in America but had different results in the past two elections, American Democrats really need to go to the people with a plan to change and repair America. Looking outside America for answers is a start and changing the attitude we are to smart to fail, we know best, America is the greatest and no one can tell us what to do will not bring the people back to vote for

them.

There is so much to fix that winning the election needs a plan to rebuilt America from the ground up. Getting married is easy but staying married is the difficult part. To stay married you need many things to work and two people to work at it. Hopefully the Republican Party, MAGA and the Heritage Foundation will be reduced to nothing by the time the next election arrives, but the Republicans really need to have a new path to take people on. They must also tell the people how they will do with detail.

Catherine Dowdell's avatar

To hell with both Republicans and Democrats! With a few exceptions, no where near enough of them are rising to defend The People and The Constitution. The state of the nation has gotten to the point where anyone who disagrees with Trump needs to stand up. It doesn’t matter if they identify more conservative than liberal, Republican than Democrat, or any other type of division. In order to get out of this, we’re all going to have to stand together to demand our democracy be rebuilt in a manner that is fair for all.

Truth Matters's avatar

You are of course correct, but in a two party system third parties just split the vote. The only game in town whether you like it or not is the Democrats. So you have to reshape the Democratic Party from within.

The added complication is that if you create a fairer more equitable vision, you would lose many of those Republicans you speak of that hate Trump but believe in small government etc.

I totally agree with, it somehow the idea of β€œsocialism” freaks people out of scares them away! Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren couldn’t get enough support despite having ideas for meaningful change for this country. There are some good young alternatives out there but they need to get backing and financial support to make a stand. We need to use new terms for the programs that will bring more equality to the people. Ditch the social democrat term and emphasize more income equality!

Truth Matters's avatar

The label needs to be PEOPLE FIRST DEMOCRATS in my humble opinion

Catherine Dowdell's avatar

Let’s try ditching all the terms. They mean different things to different people. Let’s start over with very plain, descriptive language.

Rahab Mitchell's avatar

American's history says the people will allow another (Wall Street crash) Great Depression, stand in soup lines and listen on the television for the politicians and president to recreate a social movement to restore "hope", through programs to get America back to work! This is another 'groundhog day' - wash, rinse and repeat πŸ”πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ fleece job.

I fear you are correct
