I 100% agree with you about the economic power of the people. Sadly, we "lazy Americans" have become so spoiled that we can no longer distinguish WANT from NEED. So when we're urged to stick to buying only the "essentials", we think ALL of it is essential. We're getting to a place where many Americans will not be able to afford anything but the essentials and many more won't even be able to afford the basic essentials. And I often wonder what will the Oligarchs do when they can squeeze not one more drop from the American people. 🤔
I completely agree. An economic boycott would show the government and the oligarchs backing it that the power is with the people. Rolling sick-outs would do the same, in conjunction with an economic boycott. But people who consume their news by watching Fox and listening to right wing podcasters do not know or understand the sky is falling. And many people align themselves with Trump’s rage, racism, misogyny, and xenophobia. I pray they come to their senses, but if they do, I fear it will be too late.
Theyre going to let the government close so the OMB can institute mass layoffs of government employees. Seems to me the time is long past. But, there's no time like the present for a general strike. If everyone stopped all spending and as much working as possible for just a week or two, it would send a warning. And someone needs to sue Fox "News" for incitement to violence. Let's work on getting them off the air. They're poisoning the blood of our broadcasting!!!
Americans are capitalist consumer pigs! Hold on my dear. We have to figure this out fast. Buy the damn cake and don’t buy something else, just this time, the kids should not have to suffer this evil man’s blunder.
It really is almost impossible to comprehend how America got itself into this position. But they are there, and the rest of us have to sort out how we deal with it.
This one was powerfully written. The disgraceful UN address was playing with captions on a TV at the gym. I try to ignore the one they keep on Fox "news" but I couldn't stop staring and thinking "what the actual f_ck is happening here!? How embarrassing is this!?!"
The anger did help fuel the last part of my workout... But there was absolutely no other value to his awful display of insanity.
The cartoon of Trump kicking truth …fake…there is no way in hell he could even come close to raising a leg that high. Rest of your comments right on target.
Mr. McSweeney, thank you for a very on point overview of what you could stomach of F47's UN speech. I appreciate how you then extrapolated into facts about the EU and included historical facts.
Bless you, Martin. I am, unfortunately, living in Texas, and the car is an oven even at night. I have contacted every agency, non-profit, or organization in North Texas without success. I am originally from Chicago. SS income is not a “living” wage. My health is being negatively impacted. I am ground down by the burden.
I am lost for words Bobbi, I can’t begin to understand what you must be enduring right now. I have a big following here and an even bigger following on X. Would it help if I reached out to people I know to see if anyone could offer help or advice.
I lost my home during COVID, but I was blessed to have enough money available to rent somewhere, I don’t pretend there is an equivalence, but I do understand the despair you must be feeling. I’m 66 this year and I know the challenges of trying to find a way back at our stage of life.

There is an alternative, a Peaceful Solution.
From Paul Krugman
“So how can we make a Trump implosion more likely? The public can help by doing what Target’s customers and Disney’s audience did — make it clear that they will stop paying money to institutions that lend aid and comfort to the authoritarian project.”
From The Peaceful Solution:
How much do you want to stop His Royal Heinous and the fascist takeover of the country?
Enough that you’re willing to make a small sacrifice? Like altering your spending habits for a month or two or three? That could be all it would take to get the attention of the oligarchs (formerly known as The Robber Barons in the first Gilded Age, also The Fat Cats, The Greedy Bastards).
A brief demonstration of We, the People’s, power of the purse could persuade them to quit supporting HRH and the politicians who enable him.
We quit spending, except on essentials, businesses lose money, stock market goes down, Greedy Bastards pay attention to our demands.
Greedy Bastards own most of the politicians of both major parties. GBs start losing money, tell politicians to change course and do what We, the People want.
We are running out of peaceful options. The legislature and Supreme Court are controlled by HRH. He controls the executive branch, including the Military, Justice Department, FBI, ICE, the IRS. He controls all levers of power.
We, the people, still have the power of the purse. No one can control our spending, or lack of spending. When all else fails we can go on a spending strike until the business community stops supporting HRH and the politicians who enable him.
Economic warfare is the only thing the oligarchs, the business community will understand and act on. Call it a Surreptitious General Strike (Quiet Quitting). Go to work, do as little as possible. Stop spending money except on essentials. Quit feeding the corporate beast that supports the HRH.
Stop participating. Nearly 70% of the U.S. economy is driven by consumer spending. All of us. Hobble the economy and the stock market. Mahatma Gandhi drove the British from India by peaceful civil disobedience. We can stop the fascist takeover in the same way.
We can keep rehashing past and present atrocities until our access to the internet is taken away by the regime, or we can DO something!
His name is Martin McSweeney. If you look at the "Truth Matters" profile he gives his bio. He recently did a piece that went further into his background.
Someone above referenced an article by Paul Krugman, who is another worthwhile and talented writer, but he did not author this piece
Really not trying to argue, just want to understand. I realize that his name appears as one of the writers, but why is each author’s name not listed on each article?
I'm not sure, that's just how it's always been 😅 🤷♀️
I didn't mean anything by my response other than pointing you to more info if his writing moved you enough to consider sharing. 😊 I respect the fact you were asking for a source before doing so, too!
Nice to meet you too, Martin. Perhaps you could shed some light on why the byline is only “Truth Matters”? In this day and age, I literally research anything and anyone before sharing.
Let’s shut this whole thing down for 30 days! Martin, you’re not the only one suggesting this. Your writing is superb. You have a great voice! Please, let’s convince them to shut this whole fucking thing down until they are bending the knee to us.

My thoughts also. I am already at the point of "only essentials".
I've spent most of my life at what I thought were the "bare essentials." I've recently realized that I can do better.
Me too Leslie

Thank you so much for this excellent report! I appreciate the comments you put in from other world leaders.
Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate it. It’s not all about him even though it is if that makes sense?

You are very welcome Bobbi, I’m more worried about you living out of your car with no support.

Martin, I would greatly appreciate you reaching out to your network on my behalf.
OK leave it with me for 24 hours so I can formulate an approach. Hang in there Bobbi.
Thank you. I blocked DMs because of sexual harassment and scammers. I will check in periodically for your responses.

I concur
I am repeating since January that we can cut the federal taxes. We pay them, but the state financial system keeps them in state
and we spend the funds for our needs not the federal. Like that the government will rely on red states money which is much less or none.
The red states consume what the blue states pay in taxes.
For example, California and New York get back a fraction of what they pay and even that is by begging Trump to give - see the fires
in California for which Gavin Newsom had to ask for help money, while they send more than any other state in federal tax.
If all the blue states cut the federal taxes, they will have nothing to go on.
The governors can do it, create a system of tax that controls the funds, if it’s not yet in place.
They can ask for a referendum and if the people vote to stop their taxes in state, apply the system.
In fact, the government lives from our money and they do whatever they want without our consent.
When they signed the BB Bill they took our taxes and gave them to the rich, which is insane, while people’s benefits/ rights are cut.
We are not financially dependent on Washington, they depend on us.
My old lady mistake boycott ABC not NBC.
Waiting for November 2026 is not the answer. Economic disengagement and more coordinated protests are what is needed.

I did boycott NBC. Did not realize that Sinclair was not putting Kimmel back. My boycott is back on.
