We are now a matter of 100 days away from the most consequential midterm elections in modern history and we're being told its a 'close race', Since when was rewarding failure a thing?
“Americans CAN stop this anytime without being arrested or punished in any way for their actions. STOP SPENDING on all but essential items and shift as much of that essential spending to local businesses. No need to stop eating out, just eat in locally run family eateries (NOT corporate chains). It’s about strategic spending decisions. It’s all about common sense, but if you need more detail, click here for my broader thinking. Given the SCOTUS ruling on tariffs, you now have even more power.
There is no case to be made for saying ‘there’s nothing we can do’ It really is very simple, and I would urge you to encourage everyone you know to become part of a sustained act of strategic economic disengagement, because I guarantee just by this most simple of actions, you can unlock the gate on the road back to real American values. A sustained 3-4% drop in consumer spending will occur if Americans have the collective and sustained patriotic determination to say ‘enough is enough’.
That's not, by and large, how humans are motivated. Broad appeals rarely get what Albanians did, but mostly are met by apathy. What motivates action is when people belong to something. Why oh why hasn't anyone put up a flag for a Coalition for the Good, by whatever name, where millions are at the ready for boycotts or whatever else their concerted action would bring?
How many criminal acts is Trump going to try to get a way with before the November election?
He’s now pardoning whole businesses …that is FN criminal. It’s a total embarrassment that these Republican senators and congressman go along with any shit that Trump comes up with..
He needs to be stopped now. A full country revolt and work stoppage and mass protests are needed..
ICE agents and now abusing and killing people without any repercussion …what the hell is going on?
Martin, thank you for providing clarity regarding this horrifying mess. I wish that people here would practice economic disengagement, but I must sadly report that I cannot remember a time when I have seen so many brand new autos on the road, and most are not EV. I'm so thankful for my 2002 VW Jetta, which runs like a top.
I hope I'm wrong, but I still don't see a way out of this that doesn't include violence. The people in charge will not give up without a fight.
He sat himself on fire many times, still, no one went against any crazy idea he had. If no one stopped him to demolish the White House, and to put his name near Kennedy at an iconic culture venue, none of the cowards republicans in the senate or house deserves the place they take to represent the people. It is obvious that they represent themselves, and their own interests, and that should be stopped first!
Vote them out in November, all of them! New, young people should replace all the incompetent cowards that do nothing and get paid with our money while they work against us!
As much as you’re trying to persuade people to boycott or to disengage from buying from the great retailers, the fact is that too many people in this modern society are used to the conveniences of the material stuff. Stuff that we do not take to the grave. Stuff that the soldiers who have been sent to wars of choice did not take with them. The fact of a matter is that many people value themselves by what they have. The fact is also that a lot of people are not very good at math.
I believe that what the governor of Maine proposed at some point last year has merit. We should stop paying federal taxes because they are enriching the few. More so now that Trump thinks that he owns the IRS. We should divert that money to each of our states so they can provide the programs that the federal government is denying funds to, and perhaps that might make those thugs think that the people they supposedly represent are not willing to submit to their shenanigans any longer.
For the person who says that we are better than this BS, that’s I’m afraid not what that person is going to say if this regime gets away with its agenda in November. Apologies in advance if I misunderstood what he or she tried to convey.
America has a technology communications problem. Growing up, there was news for free over the air. Your evening was the main source of national and international news gathered by investigative reporters and international correspondents. This was watched by millions across the country seeing and hearing the same thing.
Today it's seconds and a minute or two for news crammed inbetween commercials eating away at less time for reporting.
There is the limitation of 2 pay walls, internal access and streaming service. Add in social media platforms that are as diverse in coverage as clothing in a department store.
News sourced through for bigger profit by advanced technology has created a fractured audience. Just time restraint alone can't piece it all together what is relevant or not, much less fact checking who is trustworthy or not.
Im worried abt what underhanded things will be done to hurt Dems. Elon already admitted he did something to help Trump. And I think Braun got help bcz the race was close and NO ONE LIKES HIM.
One thing I'll say, if Trump does immolate I'd like to see accountability for a change. Democrats failed to take Bush down and no one deserved it better. Republicans' treasonous indecency persisted through Obama's presidency and netted us Trump. Amazingly, many Democrats don't understand Republicans are fighting a war. Against us, and law and order in general and possibly civilization. They are really not fucking around and a proportional response isn't only warranted but demanded. We're fighting against a coalition that, for various reasons, wants a long-wave civilizational catastrophe or has warm and fuzzy feelings about it for insane reasons such as these ...
A fine article (per usual), save one important point. Martin writes:
"Once that income is wrapped in an asset, it becomes what is called an ‘unrealised asset’ on which tax is not payable until that asset is sold."
That is true, and as it should be. That affects not only the rich, but also everyone lucky enough to have money invested for retirement. Taxing unrealized assets is unfair and as bad for those of moderate means as it is for the wealthy. One does not have money in one's pocket when one owns stocks, but only a promise for payment upon demand not for a fixed sum, but for a percentage of the company's value at the eventual time of sale. Taxing before then hurts growth by taking real money from a promise of uncertain value.
The correct solution is to tax money that is given as collateral for loans. That is how rich people live: They take out loans, which are not income, and live off the money while paying it back. That is the evasion. So, if I hold $100,000 in stocks, do not tax it while I hold it, because it isn't really worth $100,000 yet. But, if I give rights to $100,000 to a bank as collateral for a loan, study how to tax that without hurting ordinary people who may have middle-class reasons to do so, and are not simply gaming the system.

Altho I like the self-immolation part

Because that's what GRIFTERS do!!
