Another arrow in our collective quiver. Thanks for the piece and ideas.

Thank you for the suggestion. I assume an in depth analysis of the implementation has or will be done, including sector analysis and potential unintended consequences, as well the time line implications. We did use boycott as a tactic during our withdrawal from the British Empire. If Sam Adams et al. had not been so successful and we would have made the economically valid decision to pay for the tea, the empire may have evolved differently and the world might have walked down a path with an evolution of an enlightened global government. There would certainly have been enough difference that we would not be discussing Mr. Trump. But the voice of reason from the likes of Franklin and Burke is often not the one people hear and believe.

Thank you for your comment. That analysis is underway. Will take a little time to fully nail down, unfortunately resistance is not an exact science

stuart burstin's avatar

Having spent years in “science” and modeling, I have an understanding of how vague a notion exactness is in fact as opposed to theory.

Lori Corbet Mann's avatar

Just a suggestion, but perhaps given your expertise Stuart, you might consider doing the analysis and sharing it? We can’t expect Martin to do absolutely everything.

stuart burstin's avatar

My experience would not be relevant, unfortunately.

Thank you for taking the time to respond and explain Stuart — I appreciate it. 🙏

I agree to a spending freeze or slowdown. But would you help us find a way to bring out Theil and others like we had for Musk??? I want him to be exposed, to be dragged out of his ' closet" of control and power. SURELY THERE IS A WAY TO BRING HIM, HIS IDEOLOGY, POWER AND RIDICULOUS DARK ENLIGHTENMENT OUT INTO THE LIGHT!!! Where or what can we boycot or demonstrate against? The TESLA BOYCOTT was so effective and acted like a magnet to draw attention to Musk's corporate entitlement and practices. People came out who would ha e never protested before! HELP US FIND A WAY. HELP US FIND ANYBUSINESS THEIL HAS THAT WE CAN BOYCOTT BESIDES PALATIR. I KNOW IT IS POSSIBLE. WE NEED TO OUT HIM LIKE WE DID MUSK.He is ready to dislike. He is the next candidate we should hit.

Other than misspelling Mamdani's name --- YOUR COLUMN IS BRILLIANT!! YOU are a smarty pants guy. In a good way.

Truth Matters's avatar

I know, unforgivable, I did amend though

Purplebearmom's avatar

This is exactly what needs to happen....actual coordinated attacks on their purses!!! Thank you... sharing💜

You’ve given me the impetus to cancel my few streaming services and donate the money to public broadcasting. It’s not much but it’s something I can do in addition to protesting.

Please correct the date for No King protests. It wasn’t July 4. It was June 14.

Truth Matters's avatar

Brain fart moment. Duly corrected, thank you

Howard I's avatar

"Maybe Horan Mandami is on to something?" His correct name is Zohran Mamdani.

Truth Matters's avatar

Not my best moment. Apologies, amended

I’ve been saying online for months that an economic boycott is the power we have. Thank you for this article as you have many more followers who might finally use the power they have instead of merely raging against the dying light of America.

Do they think they're going to take our tax money and establish a concentration camp in Florida? Or deport masses of workers who maintain our society? Banish women to the kitchen and the bedroom? Allow them to continue grifting, lying, stealing and pimping? Time for tax revolt NOW at the very least!

They’ve already done the first 2 things.

I wish I knew how to create that app! I’ve started my boycott of Amazon, Target, Walmart in June (I know, late to the party) but I forced myself to get into the local shops for what I need and adjusting my needs to what they carry. Let’s keep it up the best we can!

Thanks Martin - your idea has the makings of a good scheme. It needs a coordinator and an app. Could Apple and Google Play possibly come on-side, or did you have something else in mind?

Lori Corbet Mann's avatar

Apple and Google are part of the problem.

There does have to be some kind of separation between blue and red nowadays. Another road could be secession of the blue states.

Supporting the Trump regime is risky for corporations. If the economy goes into freefall, consumer spending falls, and corporate profits decline. Corporations also bear a considerable risk of consumer backlash, similar to what happened to Tesla. Corporations are easy to kill, which is an everyday reality when you're in, or near, the C-suite. The US economy produces little tangible goods beyond natural resources and agricultural products, but buys a lot. If US consumers become financially distressed, corporate profits immediately spiral downward.

I live in CO and we , along with NM are surrounded by red states. If there’s a move by blue states to work together to turn off the $ spigot, please don’t exclude us!!🙏🏻

What I’m noticing from attending protests, talking w my and other grown kids is a general apathy towards “ politics”. Protests seem to be attended overwhelmingly by silver haired people. Where are the young people?? The 30s generation have grown up privileged, with Amazon, Door Dash, internet everywhere and anything they want at their fingertips. Getting them to voluntarily give that up will be a challenge… and this regime knows that. The ones I’ve talked with seem u willing to engage.. thinking it till all work out, because that’s how their lives have been so far. They will need to experience personal economic pain to get involved… and by then it will be too late.

What is unraveling in America right now is like a very bad day dream. Our prided “individualism” is coming back to bite us hard in our asses because we have lost whatever it was that we had before the “individualism”. Even the small percentage of us that can see what is happening are struggling to congeal. The red vs blue ideology has cemented itself in our media and our emotional immaturities. And when you add the modern value of convenience…you have the perfect storm. The answer is not even truth at the moment. What’s needed most right now is everything we are lacking: empathy, unity, critical thinking, strategy, people leadership (not politicians), urgency, and tenacity.
