I believe that what you are suggesting is what would work. If all of those who participated in the No Kings protests would stop buying all non-essential consumer items, i.e. clothing, entertainment items, concert tickets, etc., but still continue to purchase necessary for life items such as groceries, medicines, commuting costs, the economy would quickly take a nose dive. As you say, the government can't make you purchase anything.

These suggestions will not work — they would just be feel-good moves — in the absence of the coordinated, strategic attacks that Truth Matters suggests. They would hardly matter, with a scattering of people choosing different, unspoken boycotts. In isolation, they send no message. The brilliance in Truth Matters's suggestion is in its amazingly simple, low-cost gathering of the masses who all think alike, but, as yet, have had no way to work and cause united damage to the regime.

All I know is that Bernie says fight the oligarchs and General Strike US has struggled trying to reach that magical 3.5% number. So with suggestions from my readers I have been promoting what I called Resistance United. Bringing together ongoing resistance efforts to give people options knowing that we all can't support every movement. This way we can choose what we feel comfortable with. Blackout the System Organizers are encouraging everyone to stop spending and work. The problem with this one is people are afraid of losing their jobs Occupy DC is planning to do just that and start November 5 and staying until the regime falls. Not all of us are physically or financially available to withstand a DC winter. Botcott Xmas Economic Slow Down was designed around the the shoppers not the workers. Keeping our money in our own communities by supporting small local businesses instead and focusing on groceries and essentials only. BLACKOUT THE SYSTEM

Please talk about this at your No Kings Rally. This is the next step in the Anti-tRump / Fight the Oligarchs Resistance

Time to End this Evil Nightmare.

BLACKOUT THE SYSTEM is a national movement born out of frustration, injustice, and the undeniable truth that the people hold the power - not corrupt governments, not billionaires, not broken systems.

The billionaire oligarchs pay big bucks for campaigns that help elect politicians, who will support the causes that make them richer. They are the ones who elected the tRump and control the government. In an effort to bring down the tRump's administration from hell - we are strategically and peacefully shutting down the U.S. economy - by removing our labor, our spending, our financial support, forcing the system to listen.

This movement launched to remove the billionaires from our government, reclaim power for the people, restore justice, and unite citizens across all races, cultures, and classes.

We are asking all citizens to boycott billionaire businesses and products (the ones that have locations or can be purchased in every state) avoid working and spending as much as possible November 25 - December 2, 2025

Not a useful approach, because it lacks the targeted, coordinated attacks of Truth Matters's idea.

Everybody's Mamá's avatar

OCCUPY DC

Refuse Fascism (refusefascism.org) initiated this sustained, non-violent action by selecting the date (Nov 5) last summer.

A few other organizations have recently joined the effort to promote and support the effort including 50501 DC, DC Against Trump, and others like Cornell West.

The vision is to bring millions of people to DC to “surround the White House; surround the Capitol; and surround the Supreme Court” everyday, in a sustained, non-violent way, beginning Nov 5, and lasting until the Trump regime falls. This IS NOT a one day march or rally. This is a sustained occupation of the nation’s capital.

Like so many we’ve seen successfully occurring around the world in Nation’s Capitol throughout history.

People interested in participating should make their travel / lodging arrangements now and gather the supplies they will need to sustain themselves for the duration of their stay if in the event we’re able to actually shut down the city. That is the goal so people, organizations, and businesses put pressure on the regime to step down. This may be the last time we have such a chance. Let’s do this! Let me know if you have specific questions. In defiance and solidarity! —Robin Liberte’

Skian Dew's avatar

Fine if you can do it, but of too small a scale to matter enough. Only the rich would be able to afford to help. The suggestion from Truth Matters is zero cost to each participant and so of vastly larger scale, enough to truly matter.

Skian Dew's avatar

Protesting is, in general, a good idea, but Refuse Fascism's approaches — regrettably — being a waste of time, because it is scheduled in Washington, D.C., for November 5, a Wednesday. Mid-week protests generally fail to be significant, because people are unavailable to travel to them. We saw a recent example in my city with the second No Kings protest, romantically scheduled for a Thursday to commentate the anniversary of John Lewis's death. The nobility of the gesture paled in comparison with the inability of people to take time off in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week, just to cross the city, let alone the whole country. There is a 100% guarantee that "millions" of people will not be able to afford the trip to D.C. on any day! Go if you can, but do not depend upon this pending fizzle to save us.

It is not enough to be overly excited and gushing with the belief that one is saving all of "humanity." Effective solutions need to be practical. Truth Matter's suggestion leverages nearly no-cost actions that require no travel and only the loosest frameworks in time: "Do this today" or "this week," not at a specific hour. Anyone could easily comply, and no one could stop us. ICE could not attack us. It's a casual display of unstoppable, raw power, because it shows the regime that the governed can be ungovernable whenever they so choose, and can harm any big crony-business they desire while defying His Trumpness and His Stooges.

BOYCOTT XMAS TO SAVE OUR DEMOCRACY!

This is the next step in the Anti-tRump / Fight the Oligarchs Resistance. We must now go after the tRump's oligarch supporters. We must stop all unnecessary shopping at their national chain retail businesses and restaurants until the billionaire business owners, call for the tRump's resignation themselves! Historically, economic action is the most effective way to bring down a dictator. All of our resistance efforts have failed because we are doing a terrible job at getting the word out and bringing in new supporters. I have hope and excitement for the No Kings Rally for they have done a great job saturating the media with their mission. Now we must do the same for all our resistance organizers. Take the opportunity to announce upcoming resistance events at your No Kings rallies. The success or failure of these events are in your hands. Don't let it fail like all the others. Let this be our last attempt to Dump the tRump! Help us flood the media by promoting current events or starting new ones. Don't let the tRump defeat us!

Skian Dew's avatar

Completely unworkable. People are going to shop for Christmas, and so can not boycott everything. Truth Matters has taken this general idea, extended it far beyond just Christmas, and targeted it in a way that could truly hurt and arouse fear in the regime.

Truth Matters's avatar

Don’t worry, I’ll explain it in more detail in my post later today now I’ve had time to give everything careful consideration and having listened to feedback.

Everybody's Mamá's avatar

RESISTANCE UNITED

THE FIGHT TO SAVE OUR DEMOCRACY IS NOT OVER! IMPERATIVE NEXT STEPS!!!

No Kings Day was a spectacular display of Solidarity! Great to see the resistance growing but the fight to save our democracy is far from over. The Resistance Must Unite!

We are struggling to meet our goal to bring down the tRump. All of our resistance efforts have failed. Seven million just isn't enough! We only need a mere 3.5% or 11 million American citizens exhibiting ongoing daily SUSTAINED resistance to meet this goal. Going to a protest every few months is not going to accomplish anything! We must choose to do something every day to show that we want our democracy back. Resistance United gives everyone opportunities and options to build and support the new Civil Rights Movement daily!

STEP 1) Spread the Word - Warn everyone about the evil coming out of the White House. Make our resistance actions go viral!

There is no movement without Calls for Action! We must become vigilant about Spreading the Word. Read and share the links throughout this article. Make them go viral! They give you something to talk about and explain why everyone should be supporting this New Civil Rights Movement.

Senator Sanders talks about the disparities between the MAGA rich and the average American. The numbers are outrageous! The billionaire oligarchs must pay their employees fair wages and pay the same taxes we do!

The tRump is hurting Democrats and Republicans a like - they just don't know it yet. An overview of the hate the tRump has unleashed in America.

https://onemommy.substack.com/p/maga-should-know-the-truth-about?r=113nff

STEP 2) STOP SHOPPING and spending money unnecessarily! Quit making the billionaire oligarchs richer! They are the true rulers of this country. They control how the government is run. They underpay their workers and hog all the wealth for themselves! We must demand better wages and the end of the administration from hell!!! Boycott billionaire chain businesses and they themselves will call for the tRump's resignation!

BLACKOUT THE SYSTEM:

https://onemommy.substack.com/p/blackout-the-system-second-wave?r=113nff

STEP 3) OCCUPY DC to continue to show the world that the American Stands United!

OCCUPY DC is a sustained occupation of the nation’s capital. The vision is to bring millions of people to DC to “surround the White House; surround the Capitol; and surround the Supreme Court” everyday, in a sustained, non-violent way, beginning Nov 5, and lasting until the Trump regime falls. This IS NOT a one day march or rally.

More information about OCCUPY DC Mass Movement: https://onemommy.substack.com/p/occupy-dc-mass-movement-starting?r=113nff

PROTESTS show the world we're willing to stand up for our civil rights! Many communities have weekly protest that are just as important as our mass protests. Find a chapter near you.

SLOWING DOWN THE ECONOMY is a safe and powerful way to resist for those can't risk their jobs or are afraid to attend a protest.

OCCUPING DC is for our brave civilian heroes and peaceful warriors willing to go all out to save our democracy!

Please understand the difference between large chains at the mall and small shops on Main Street. The profit margin in small local stores is so thin, that one day’s lost sales can make them squeak through, or shutter their doors. So please list small local shops among the essentials that keep our communities alive!

Truth Matters's avatar

Please read my post later today where I have refined my proposal. This is covered.

Lucille Tamm's avatar

I’m already doing that. Clothing and other non essential stuff comes from thrift stores or I make it myself.

Heather Olivier's avatar

I’ve Been doing that since trump enexpectedly took a win in 24. We know how to do without after COVID…maybe COVID was our teacher…

Oh yeah it was DJT who contracted COVID probably from china and then infected the WHITEHOUSE staff and further spread to hit every American city…

How can one NOT DETEST this baby idiot STUPID deplorable vengeful destructive law-breaking man.

Regana's avatar

With the orange one leading? All the government knows is spend on his items!

Just everyday people stop buying them they will feel that impact.

Joyce Roquemore Hanly's avatar

Buying directly! BOYCOTT AMAZON

A home made holiday season. Paper chains for decorations, home baked goods on the festive table, offers to babysit, service the car, mow the grass, clean windows etc instead of purchased gifts … a single secret Santa basket for office parties.. entirely do able if your family and friends agree on this together.

Karen V's avatar

This is certainly what many of us have been saying for a very long time - targeting the billionaires where it hurts. You're exactly right - it must be an effort like the Disney boycott, threatened, carried out and in unison. After No Kings it should be simple to spread the word. I like your target of Netflix as a start. I've heard rumblings of No Transaction Tuesdays and we could capitalize on that weekly as another simple way to damage their pockets. Switch from Home Depot to Lowe's or any other hardware brand. Mom and Pop Mondays where we buy, eat and boost small businesses, not billionaires. Food Bank Fridays we could donate staples to fill the food banks since they are desperately needed right now. So many ways to help or make a strong statement without even leaving home. I so appreciate all that you and other organizations/leaders are doing to help us turn things around. It will take all of us, but we're in it for the sanity of our nation and the world.

Truth Matters's avatar

You and I speak the same language Karen. It’s the only viable solution.

Katherine Sogolow's avatar

WE HAVE THE POWER OF THE PURSE!!!!

Gaye Reese's avatar

And I think we should boycott Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Hit the huge businesses where it hurts.

Karen V's avatar

Netflix is actually ok. They donated to Prop 50. It should be Prime/Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, T-Mobile, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc....and mainly support small/local businesses too. Hopefully a social media campaign for this will gain momentum.

Gaye Reese's avatar

I have also heard good things about what Netflix is donating its money to. Please hold off on a Netflix boycott.

Truth Matters's avatar

It’s already been removed from the proposal Gaye

Clara Thomas's avatar

What would happen if millions of people sued the president and his administration? Since court cases are all that seems to be slowing him down and even those aren’t stopping him. What if we the people (the majority) sued him?

Randy Stokes's avatar

I’ve been saying that all year! Sue the bastard! Give him a taste of his own pathetic medicine!

Count me in for a Nationwide Economic Boycott!

Mary Healey's avatar

We would have to have suffered a concrete injury

Trump would have had to cause it

A court would have to have a legal remedy.

Basically impeachment is the only way the people can do anything and we have no voice right with Congress

Laura Coyne's avatar

I like that idea, whether it’s a class action lawsuit or some other instrument. Let’s explore that together!

Laura❤️♓️☮️'s avatar

I’m in…no matter what it may be, count me in!

Skian Dew's avatar

Noting at all would happen, because suing costs more than most could afford, the courts move slowly, and the Supreme Court is captured by the White House.

Truth Matters's avatar

I’m Martin by the way. Nice to meet you.

Skian Dew's avatar

Golly, Martin! A personalized reply from Truth Matters himself! Thank you!

We do seem to think alike. I love your idea for nailing the regime. I've been (greatly saddened with) coming up blank with a realistic notion of what we could do for months now, but immediately saw that your idea would work. It removes the planned action from the realm of aspirational, delusional fantasy and steers it into effortless, effective coordination.

Well, almost effortless. The trolls and thugs and regime would chase us, to stop the daily instructions from spreading. We'd need some cyber-security wizards on our side to keep the word moving, but there ought to be plenty of skilled volunteers for that. The problem would be vetting them, to avoid moles. Maybe NoKings.com already has the necessary security, or would know how to build it.

I like the resilience, too. If someone's kitchen appliance broke and it had to be replaced at a big box store that was currently targeted, the protest would not collapse. That would be okay. It would be enough to drastically slow voluntary purchases, to ask those who could to wait. Just gotta bust the profit margins, so the noose tightens. Asking little of people makes compliance more endurable, so that it could last longer and be more effective.

Can't tell you how much time I've wasted worrying about the state of the nation. Would rather stop stewing and do something. I'm a better planner and teacher than administrator. How does this move from dreaming to doing? This is not the most secure place to talk. What next?

De Anna's avatar

Feels like doing so might actually bring about an impeachment. That is, of course, if the true Republicans want to save their party.

Mary Healey's avatar

I posted a note today on this very subject — I’ll see if I can link it here as a comment

Lindy's avatar

It would mean nothing with the regime in power.

Truth Matters's avatar

Oh I can assure you that if implemented it absolutely would.

Ebb's avatar

yup. class action is how the immigration attorneys are attacking the government.

Susan Ross's avatar

I hardly know how to breathe in this moment with such as brilliant plan as this. I have read several of your Truth Matters posts and find the clearly articulated nature of what you say, nothing less than brilliant. Having attended the No Kings event on the 18th, I am entirely on board. Thank you for being here.

Truth Matters's avatar

That’s very kind of you Susan. I’m often accused of being too hard on Dems, but it comes from utter frustration that they can’t see what I can see.

It’s all about fighting smart. Blunt instruments don’t work. No Kings is a brand that could pull this off.

Barry's avatar

I agree with this approach. I was on the No Kings follow-up call last night (with 36,000 other YouTubers). I have no doubt they are group to lead us and with their alliances they are moving in this direction. I would personally prefer starting with a Bezos or Zuckerberg boycott over Netflix. You are right that a General Strike is not feasible for most. LFG!

Truth Matters's avatar

I’m hearing you on Netflix, others have suggested the same. I was going for headlines in corporate media, but they are grberallly left leaning.

David P's avatar

I sure hope that Indivisible is working behind the scenes to create a "No Kings Economic Army" because l found last night's follow-up meeting lacked any kind of ambition. Call your senator? It's no wonder why the audience began to peel off quickly.

We the People want real action, and the strategy you laid out is fantastic because it's targeted in its approach, with a desired result that is both pragmatic and impactful.

Sign me up!

Truth Matters's avatar

Interested to have your feedback David. As I’m outside the US it wouldn’t allow me to register to attend. I’m disappointed to note that. I have reached out to Ezra Levin. We’ll have to see if he comes back to me.

David P's avatar

Hi, Martin. I can forward you the email I received today that summarized last night's meeting if you feel comfortable sending me your email address. I promise not to abuse it.

I don't know if it helps, but here's what's now listed on the "What's Next" portion of the No Kings website. As you'll see, there's nothing especially helpful or meaningful. https://www.nokings.org/next

I sure hope Ezra replies to you. In the meantime, I'm keeping tabs of other authors who have been advocating for some kind of strike or boycott. I thought Marie Newman's recent post was excellent.

Let me know how I can help the cause. I'm not well connected. In fact, I barely know my way around Substack. But you can consider me boots on the ground.

Truth Matters's avatar

I did look at the site earlier in the day and clearly it’s been updated since then. There certainly seems no audacity of hope in the website update.

Truth Matters's avatar

Yes please David I’ve sent you a message

David P's avatar

Let me know if you didn't get it.

Ready to help!

Truth Matters's avatar

Got it. Cheers David

Barry's avatar

I hear you on No Kings call last night but they just got 7 million people out and I’m going to have a little patience while they figure out next move. It was clear to me that they know this has to be a multi-pronged movement, including economic boycotts. They seem to be in best position to lead this.

Leah Jennison's avatar

Yes! Is anyone else willing to stop shopping on Amazon, give up Amazon Firestick TV, Prime anything and everything! I am all in if other people are in too! JB has doubled his income in a very short time. I can’t afford to boycott Walmart because I am retired and buy my food there. But Amazon, yes! How about WaPo subscriptions? Let’s go!

Noted. I’ll be refining my ideas in my post tomorrow.

Cheryl in Seattle's avatar

I agree--I think Netflix is one of the good guys!

Maryam's avatar

Nailed it! Everyone I know feels frustrated — not knowing what to do or how to make a bigger impact when nothing seems to stop the disintegration of checks and balances in our government. Count me in. I’ll start by sharing this with everyone I know.

Judi Lakin's avatar

Sounds like a good plan to me. I’ve already pretty much stopped the unnecessary spending. I’m not shopping for Christmas, but will donate and give cash to family. No car, furniture, phone, cancelled several streaming services already! Also cancelled a planned cruise!

Truth Matters's avatar

You are on the right page Judi. This is about strategic participation.

Tom's avatar

My understanding is Netflix is one of the good guys, supporting projects by the Obamas and other progressive causes. I won't participate in harming companies just because they are big. Amazon, on the other hand, doesn't need my money after giving Melania millions for her "life story". I intend to spend less across the board. Hard economic times are coming when the AI bubble bursts.

Truth Matters's avatar

I’m buying what you are selling Jane and I’m listening, I was just outline my bare bones thinking today. I’ll refine things fir tomorrow’s post.

Doug Spraley's avatar

Cut spending, buy needs not wants. Save your money to carry you through the coming recession. Do not support companies that support Trump. Save your investing for the recession when stocks bottom out. As said above a drop in consumer spending will have a huge impact on Trump and billionaires.

Paula Loftin's avatar

Thank you! This gives me hope. The general strike concept is far too dangerous and painful for too many folks. I have been advocating for an economic strike among my friends and family for a long time. Let's get 'er done!

Carol Claire's avatar

I love the idea of a national purchase strike, but would rather strike Amazon or Walmart for backing the Heritage Foundation. Also remember to support your local small businesses this holiday season, they need our support more than ever!

Janine Bennette's avatar

Agreed. Amazon also donated money to destroy the People’s House and build a tacky monument (ballroom) to DJT. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c891yxgj44ko

Additionally, Amazon plans to replace workers with robots. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/21/technology/inside-amazons-plans-to-replace-workers-with-robots.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

Truth Matters's avatar

Amazon certainly seems to be getting the vote for sure. I’m good with that. My concern has been with Amazon, in so much as people should still buy low value products to keep drivers in work, but boycott large ticket high margin products.

Janine Bennette's avatar

I was addicted to Amazon. I can get most of the low cost items from Costco. Plus it’s easy for people to cancel their Prime memberships for sure, even if they need to buy things here and there from Amazon.

Deb Chrystal's avatar

Well stated, many of are caregivers for those who will not survive if we strike.. on the other hand, I can SERIOUSLY curtail my spending, stay local and support others.

Truth Matters's avatar

You get it, great to see there is an understanding of my thinking. I’ll develop my thinking a little more in tomorrow’s post.

Deb Chrystal's avatar

There are many things we can boycot.. look what happened with Target and Disney!!

Truth Matters's avatar

It’s not about the boycott it’s about the coordination. The reason why Republican messaging is so efficient and effective is because they coordinate messaging.

Without discipline and synchronised action it’s completely ineffective.

Sharon's avatar

Absolutely! Reading Dark Money by Jane Mayer it was a business plan methodically put place and execution precisely They played the long covert game. We must know our-opponent well!

Diane Love (St Petersburg FL)'s avatar

If this abomination is built, I hope the next president turns it into a homeless shelter or headquarters for World Kitchen or a new version of US AID. Anything but a place where oligarchs and world leaders are charged to pay homage to Dear Leader.

Rebecca Poage's avatar

De Anna - you make an excellent suggestion. Maybe a class action lawsuit of concerned citizens could band together for this.

Mary Healey's avatar

Here’s my note from earlier today:

Serious question — how do we divest ourselves from companies that we let manage us?

Companies that don’t tell the whole truth, media that sane-washes, streaming services that air ICE ads or donated to Trump in some capacity, companies who are “donating” for the vulgar dance hall (and I mean no disrespect to any dancers of any kind)

Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, JP Morgan Chase, ExxonMobil, Walmart, Target, Spotify, YouTube, HBO, Hulu, and Pandora, CBS, ABC, Warner Bros, Paramount, WaPo (and many more)

If we cut ourselves off from all these companies we limit information flow and purchasing options. We can’t all cancel our streaming services if we want to hear diverse viewpoints from the US and abroad. We can’t all buy local because local often means more expensive. And local often means they don’t have what we need.

Here’s what we are doing:

We are not spending any money for the holidays this year

We have already stopped eating out when Trump took office

We stopped buying unneeded or unnecessary goods and services when Trump took office

We plan our meals to limit spending

We cancelled Paramount to protest the firing of Jimmy Kimmel

——

Maybe we can’t cancel everything indefinitely. BUT —— Can all of us cancel all of our subscriptions for a month? Two months? Every other month indefinitely?

A massive #NoKings protest to show the companies kowtowing to Trump that they should be focused on their customers?

If there’s anyone out here reading my posts let me know what you think.

Truth Matters's avatar

I’ll come back to you tomorrow if that’s OK, it’s after midnight here and I am exhausted.

Amazon (and Audible) were my first cancellations. I’d be stuck without my (Apple ) phone though. I’m in Western Australia and we have a reasonable national broadcaster the ABC (Australian broadcasting corp) which I check daily and I often read my local newspaper and suburban advertiser. I check bushfire and seismic reports. I regularly check Al Jazzera both for headlines and podcasts. I also randomly check a variety of international newspapers Canadian BC, The Guardian(UK), Hindu Times, Jakarta Post, etc in English language versions and many podcasters. I like Australian “Perun” on the war in Ukraine and other geopolitical issues, also American Jake Broe on Ukraine. I flick through American media: Meidas Touch is entirely left wing but will report on more things even than Rachel Maddow of MSNBC. When I have a little extra money I will invest in Ground News which I am told reports across a spread of media noting their biases. Yes, this is by choice. I read constantly and I have never ever owned or wanted a television and when I was given one I promptly passed it on. If I want to watch a big event I visit a neighbour! I think discussion about rather than passive consumption of media is probably key.💚🌺🇦🇺

Thank you for your efforts to think through this and put it out there. I'm in and will be sharing this with like-minded and like-spirited friends. This makes so much more sense than a general strike which way too many Americans cannot afford. I can do without Netflix and other services. I've already canceled Amazon, YouTube TV and the Washington Post. And life has gone on just fine!

I’ll outline it in a little more detail tomorrow, which might give you a better idea of my thinking.
