Hurrah! A targeted boycott that worked. A good first step. But if you start boycotting all the corporations that are enabling the fascist takeover of the country, soon you’re at a general spending strike, which is a good thing. Let’s do it!
We, the People, can’t easily or safely withhold our tax dollars that are allowing this corrupt government to function. Our tax dollars fund the fascist takeover.
But as consumers we can indirectly withhold our tax dollars. Consumer spending is about 70% of the economy. That spending ends up as tax dollars. Stop unnecessary spending and the money funding the fascist takeover will disappear.
Martin, please continue to share your insight and your opinions. They are a breath of fresh air. Never in my eight decades have I seen our country pulled apart like it is today. Reading Steven Miller’s words at the Charlie Kirk memorial was frightening. Listening to the video footage of him speaking gave me chills. Knowing there are people in this administration who are filled with hate is daunting. Where do we go from here? How do we reclaim a sense of dignity and respect for one another when the very top of the pile says, “I hate my opponent.” I appreciate your words; “truth matters,” indeed. Thank you for sharing your personal challenges. Ours is to get through this time of chaos and believe sanity awaits on the other side.
It’s extremely difficult to deal w/ the daily deluge of the rump regime’s corruption, lies, and cruel policies. However, ‘We The People’ are in the majority and we will never give up fighting for our Democracy!! We need to: stay positive; get involved in community pro-democracy organizations like Indivisible; support independent journalists via Substack, YouTube, and podcasts; and, support our neighbors and community organizations (food banks) who may be worse off than ourselves. Oh yes, and shut down any and all unnecessary buying! The boycotts actually work!! Do whatever you can to help, because we need people like you who care and know this regime is totally disgusting!!
Honestly, I’ve only read the headline at this point, but I think the best response to the corporate media is just to shut the shit off entirely. Trump has demonized it so much, it’s practically discredited anyways. It should be fairly easy to just translate that message into recognition that it’s all bullshit. But then I’ve been on to Chomsky‘s ideas for well over a decade, so I guess easy for me to say.
Thank you as ever Manda. I struggled over whether to post it, but on balance I thought it’s important to open up a little so readers get a better feel for what shaped my writing.
Your words are beautiful Martin, and, having myself had a Good Samaritan, I understand where you are and where you were. We all (many) did our part not for Kimmel but for the outrage that is this constant violation of basic human rights. I consider myself lucky to live in Europe and not the US, and I expect all Americans with a brain and a conscience to rise up againt this vile takeover of decency that is taking place. If they don't then they are partisan to it. They can't just write on social networks, their thoughts and prayers are meaningless, they can't move away. They need to stay there and fix this mess their goverment is making. I am doing my part. I can't stay away from Google unfortunately but that's basically it for me.
When you started on the path of thatt misused word (noawadays) Truth, but thanks to people like you we can get it back, you knew that wwas the true couse. I'm a sailor, most people, especially Americans are adrift. They have never had a war on their land that didn't just involve each other, they have no idea what to do. I love that many now are rising yp, this nokings movement is great. There is a huge warning on the front page to never bring arms of any kinds at their meetings, that they are non violent. This says it all. Like Kimmel last night. Against any kind of violence. You are a brave man and give courage to many people Martin.
You are most welcome. My readership is a treasured community to me. I may sound like an old romantic, but I still believe in community and the inherent good in people. That attitude has cost me a few times in my life, but it helps me sleep at night.
Martin, thank you for your well researched and outside perspective on the shit show of this country. Your articles are some of the most thorough and most intrusting and I enjoy them so much.Thank you so much for sharing them with all of us. And I completely agree.I wish the 25th element would be invoked. Too bad nobody will because they can keep using him as a mouthpiece while steven miller runs the puppet strings and everyone else runs the chaos show.
You can only report in the moment, unless you have an ability to see the future. I’m not fully up to speed yet, but am aware that some local stations will not see the show. That’s not on ABC though who were the target of the boycott. It’s much harder to target Sinclair and Nexstar.
I’ve heard it suggested that viewers of Sinclair channels note the companies advertising on air and contact them to state that if they continue in Sinclair, you will boycott their products, and do so.
Hey Martin, thank you so much for allowing us to know a little more of your background. I am of an age where 'background' helps to provide a better perspective.
I have failed retirement a few times - I'm 73, and the next deadline is January - I may, or may not, finally hang up my Trackpad more permanently. I love what I'm doing, and my own love-of-my-life (of 52 years) supports my need to continue working.
I have found though, about 25 years ago, that I became very interested in sustainability - of ourselves, our community, country, and the world. I have learned much since then, and we're better for it.
However, after the initial shock of Trump 1.0 actually happening, I could not believe T2.0 would get a run. I was recuperating after a health scare from April this year, and found I could not draw myself away from folk like you, Paul Krugman, HCR, RR and so on, after discovering SubStack. I have to take a breather now and then, as what we are witnessing will be without peer in our lifetimes, and it's too easy to disappear down the rabbit hole, even from our distant vantage point 'down under'.
Please continue to seek the Truth - it does Matter. We need your - and their - wise perspectives.
Boycott Disney

I cut the cable cord in 2014 and never looked back! Thank you for making your excellent articles available to everyone.

Thank you for your kind words, these are indeed challenging times, but I do believe our collective efforts will prevail
Martin, thank you for the kind words, you do a great job informing, and helping us to stay sane.
Thank you for the work you do!
I saw yesterday the speech that Steven Miller gave at the Kirk’s wake and I think it represents who they are:
https://youtu.be/_MLRcf3diso
They need Trump to keep the front as the idiot clown, so they can do the dirty job in shadow.
It is scary the level of hate they have for the democrats and the demagoguery they promote.
I am sure that many small minds believe this evil “son of Gobbles” who spits lies and hate at every occasion.
It wasn’t a wake, it became a rally, a meeting of monsters spreading their hatred towards more than half of the country!
It is imperative to win the next election and to wipe them out forever, these monsters should not be allowed to live between people,
they belong in a jungle with wild, ferocious creatures.
I can’t imagine those creatures because no matter how ferocious an animal is, it is much better than they are.
Thank YOU for your consistent support and contributions to my conversations, I very much appreciate you and what you have to say Simon

Thank you for sharing your background. You made yourself more human, and in a world lacking humanity you've been a treasure!
Thank you as ever Manda. I struggled over whether to post it, but on balance I thought it’s important to open up a little so readers get a better feel for what shaped my writing.
Thank you for this essay, especially your point that no one seems to have the balls to just say, "No! Enought is enough"!

Thank you for you kind words. I have grown so much not only as a writer, but as a person since I’ve been here.
Thank you and please keep up the good work.

Thank you for what you do
Thank you and I will Charlotte
Your report about reinstatement of Jimmy Kimmel is already old news. We will not be viewing his return. Shameful Sinclair & Nexstar.
You can only report in the moment, unless you have an ability to see the future. I’m not fully up to speed yet, but am aware that some local stations will not see the show. That’s not on ABC though who were the target of the boycott. It’s much harder to target Sinclair and Nexstar.

Paula, if you cut the cable you can see ABC with an antenna, they still emit through air. I cut the cable many years ago but
I have an antenna and see many channels for free. Look on Amazon for a digital antenna and try one. If it does not work where you are, send it back.
Fortunately Amazon has a good policy on return.
Thank you for your brilliant business ethos of 💚 and truth before profit. It is a model more should follow.

I just found your substack and am glad to be here. Thank you for standing up for what is right!
