There's no lack of commitment on the ground; there is no lack of spirit or willingness to fight to save the soul of a nation and shield representative democracy from this existential threat.
Look at how the DNC treated David Hogg. He was elected vice chair. He advocated for replacing the "effective " politicians. They screamed "again". Well, we all remember Feinstein sleeping through hearings. I hope they heed your messages. Business as usual will not defeat fascism.
you’re not wrong. while I vehemently oppose the Republican Party, I’m not OK with the Democrats thinking that going back to status quo is OK. Trump was a symptom of a problem. The AOCs, Crocketts, Hoggs and Mamdanis are the solution. If establishment Democrats remain in denial about that, there is no hope other than a momentary reactionary swing to the left that will then be battled by more corruption until it swings back to the right.
This moment in history feels raw, restless, and real — and the people have every right to feel that way. Trust has been spent like loose change in a casino of politics, and what’s left is a public that’s wiser, angrier, and no longer willing to be sedated by slogans or spin. The truth is simple: people aren’t cynical by nature — they’re exhausted by being lied to.
For years, both parties have underestimated how deeply the American public feels the betrayal of broken promises. The frustration we’re seeing now isn’t just political; it’s moral. People are tired of watching power serve itself. They want accountability, not applause lines. They want courage, not choreography. And they’re not wrong to demand it.
It’s easy for leaders to call this mood “populist anger,” but that misses the point. This isn’t rage for its own sake — it’s clarity. Ordinary citizens can see what’s happening: the money pipeline runs from corporations to Congress, and policies flow the same way. The middle class is shrinking, the working poor are invisible, and every election cycle begins with hope and ends with déjà vu.
But here’s the remarkable thing — the people haven’t given up. They’re more awake now than at any time in living memory. Across generations, from students burdened by debt to families crushed by rent, there’s a shared understanding that politics, as it stands, is broken. And yet, beneath that anger, there’s still belief — belief that it can be fixed if enough people stop waiting for permission and start demanding representation worthy of them.
This is not a mood to suppress; it’s a movement to respect. The public isn’t the problem — it’s the pulse. When citizens say they’ve had enough, they’re not rejecting democracy. They’re reminding it what it’s for.
If the establishment has the humility to listen, this could be the beginning of renewal, not collapse. Because what the people are asking for isn’t radical — it’s profoundly reasonable: honesty, fairness, and a government that remembers who it works for.
Thank you so much for your well considered and thoughtful contribution to the conversation. You and I are unquestionably in sync on this important issue.
While I am not sure that politicians should be paid more, I do think they should have to live with the same conditions that the average US citizen has to live under. They should have to buy their health insurance from the same insurers we as citizens do. No coverage when not working. No continuation of benefits once retired, only Medicare and whatever "advantage" plan you can pay for. No guaranteed pension. They should have to figure out how to save for their retirement. Mandatory retirement age for all government employees including Supreme Court justices, no lifetime appointments. I'm sure there is much more.
I must re-read and give these ideas time to cook, but i am certain that to make serious changes to our broken system, the old guard [yes, even Dems] must be retired if they cannot embrace these new ideas. Those that cannot or will not fight to overturn Citizens United once we have the power back will be revealed as part of the useless, corrupt system—feeding on the public teat until it runs dry. Good stuff here. If you agree, please share.
You do a great job laying out the problems with the Democratic Party and democracy. What I didn’t see was ideas on how to create change other than better financial support for the politicians in office, which I do agree with. We need more ideas on creating change.
Yes, me too, he is also calm, kind but ferm. Besides he is a religious man, he would attract the Bible Belt. I am not sure how will he resist to the avalanche of slurs from the right but I doubt they can find something to accuse him, unless they lie as they usually do.
There's so much incredible talent in the Democratic party. We should all be focused on building up people like Talarico and less focused on the the old guard. They'll get there with some help.
I very much appreciate this line of thinking including the part about capitalism. "Wild West" capitalism is a good name for it. Any economic system will be corrupted if dishonest, amoral people are in charge. It doesn't matter what you label it. Democrats must not ride these election wins as the "tide has turned". Some polls still show that Republicans will continue to vote Republican no matter who or what is happening, no matter how much they are suffering because of this regime. I refuse to be lulled into believing that the tide has turned and it seems very apparent the old guard in the Democratic party do not want things to change.
Then sharing my thoughts brings some value to the conversation Tammy. You are wise not to be sucked in. The DNC are already riding on that wave sending out more begging emails. I find that deeply irritating and disingenuous.
You are correct about the Republican base too. That’s why it’s important to read tomorrow’s piece when people will really think I’ve lost my mind, but hopefully after some thought, it might make perfect sense.
Your writing inspires people to think beyond what the msm is telling them. Your perspective from the outside is very valuable, unfiltered and honest and sometimes hard to accept. I really appreciate it. So many people here, especially young people, denounce capitalism as the source of our problems but I believe it is capitalism run amok supported by legislation that allows profits for shareholders to disavow humanitarian policies that is at least part of the problem. The US has been treated like a huge casino for far too long.
You are correct. As I am very open about, I’m not here to tell people what they want to hear. I’m not a therapist, but I am by nature a deeply empathetic person.
The truth in its unvarnished raw state can be challenging to listen to and I’m happy to challenge people’s thinking because it promotes critical thought.
We are living in challenging times when truth is our greatest friend. I am rarely dismissive of criticism and as you will note I’m happy to engage with my readers because it’s the very least I can do.
Why do so many of you care more about keeping democrats under your boot ‘where they belong’ instead of praising them for going against their morals and their oath. They’re forced to play dirty and they stepped up. Their lives and their families lives have been threatened, but they showed up anyway. AFTER a colleague and spouse were the victims of a ‘crazy person’. They come to our defense.
They have their baggage and their faults and whatever else you want to blame them for, but they came and they sat at the table. For us. Maybe let the American people feel a couple of days of hope, relief, a tad of joy before you crush us all with articles like this. We need to stay in the fight and who wants to with this kind of pep talk
With ALL due respect. This is my place and I love it here, so I feel my opinion is welcome.
Thank you for your important contribution to the conversation. I can sense your frustration, and regardless of what you may think, I do sympathise with your position in an ideal world. I said quite clearly, Democrats should celebrate the win, the key point, however, is NOT to misinterpret the results and suggest 'The Dems are back', because it simply is not true, and all the available data supports that fact.
Nobody wants the Dems to win more than me; it is essential to the country's well-being. My simple proposition is that if they want to cement a long-term future for both them and the country, then structural change has to take place within the party. Life is always easier when we bury our heads in the sand, but when we remove them, the same problem is staring us in the face —and it's even bigger, I'm afraid.
I’m in agreement with your thoughts on the need for structural change. Our country needed the shakeup as well as fresh bodies in the senate and congress. It’s past time to freshen up our pool of contenders who have changed as society has, who have the pulse of their peers.
THAT is the crux of the matter... we must support the Dems getting back in power, no question! But once WE THE PEOPLE make that choice, if we don't raise hell about making fundamental change in the system, it's the same old, same old... pendulum swings, 1% continues to run the show... our engagement must continue until new leadership in the Democratic party can create the change that must be made...
I also love the idea of the US. A government by the people, for the people. Too many times this dream has been dashed. I thought Al Gore was a shoe in. Wrong. I thought no way would George W be in office again. Wrong. I never believed Trump would be elected over Hillary. Again wrong. Way too many people believe in what Trump is delivering. I will not be suckered into believing that a few wins for Democrats means everything is good again. Wake up and smell the coffee. Too many Americans actually like what Trump is doing. By the way, I caucused for Bernie.
The most disgusting and outrageous point in my mind..."Jeffreys and Schumer, along with many establishment Democrats, chose instead on that day to attend the wedding of Alex Soros (son of George Soros) and Huma Abedin. This was, at the time, a deliberate political move to distance themselves from the No Kings movement in case the protests turned violent." I refuse to support them and will continue to scream out loud to them. unforgivable and clueless.
As this article states.... "'self-preservation and self-enrichment are tragically systemic and now woven into the fabric of the Democratic Party". This begs the question, is it even possible to "fix" the party, or maybe it makes sense to replace those in power with newer, more progressive thinkers. Learn about candidates. Then Vote! Tuesday was not a Democratic wave, but a flood of we the people speaking out against the status quo.
Thank you for putting into words how badly the democratic party needs to change. I am older and have felt this way ever since McGovern. The shabby way the dnc treated Bernie is why they lost. They have long been what I refer to as republican light (corrupt adjacent). This is why I am and always have been an independent voter. The democratic party has ignored us to their peril. There are more independent voters than democrats and our numbers are increasing. We are not dumb, we do not fall for the blue team/red team schtick, we want results. As a result, of diminishing results, more people have lost faith.
Until we (1) elect leaders who state as their priority they will pass laws against playing the stock market while in office (including family). (2) pass laws to abolish lobbyists and the ability of elected officials to become lobbyists. (3) abolish omnibus (pork barrel) legislation(no more sneaking in a provision on birth control to a much needed aid package). Every bill should stand alone (a up and down vote) and always published with the voice vote record, so the people can see if their interests are being upheld. (4)pass laws to eliminate the electoral college and establish election by popular vote. (5) get rid of citizens united. (6) Impeach everyone related to this regime and prosecute for crimes committed. Lawyers implicated should lose their license to practice. (7) restructure, term limit & expand the supreme court. (8) We the Peope should actually pass a meaningful Equal Rights Amendment that includes everyone.
I feel the most important thing for people is to actually see that everyone is equal under the rule of law (no matter the party or person). No fines and a slap on the wrist, but real punishment & restitution for the crimes of sex trafficing, treason, war crimes and the theft of billions. All corporate monopolies need to be broken apart. For too long we have watched as wealthy criminals get off, while ordinary people are still in prison for misdemeanors. For too long the american tax payer has bailed out banks, car manufacturers, investment companies because they are "too big to fail". While the people get a few hundred dollars rebate and your retirement fund has been wiped out.
You are not alone. If they call you crazy, so am I. If you want the people to believe, justice must be evident for all to see. We have a lot of work to do, but at this moment in time I feel hopeful that just maybe we can win this fight. We are a nation of immigrants and because of this we need to continue to remember that we are all in this together. We all came to this country for the same reason, a better life for our children. We will only have freedom when everyone is free to choose to be who they are regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion. Freedom comes with no exceptions, but it should come with consequences if you break the law.
Thank you, Joan, for taking the time to sit down and contribute to this meaningful conversation. We are living in challenging times, which I think require some out-of-the-box thinking. I think people have become so exhausted and so weary from it all that it's difficult at times to get people to focus. The electoral victories this week were essential to lift people's spirits; my only concern is not to misinterpret the results out of the desperate need for good news. - Martin
I am so disillusioned with the Democratic Party right now that I am changing my party affiliation to Independent. I strongly believe that greed and selfishness is going to totally destroy our republic. Already our democracy has been dismantled piece by piece by project 2025, through inaction of the Democratic leaders who need to be replaced, and the not-so-supreme Supreme Court. The President has clearly show his true colors all his life and only cares about getting richer. I am hoping and praying a new leader will emerge who cannot be bought, and who cares whether Americans have food, housing, education, utilities, and affordable medical care. For people to believe that the recent election proves that everything will be fine now shows how naive, in denial, and ignorant so many American citizens truly are. But then, the 2024 election proved that. What saddens me the most is I don’t see my fellow medical personnel coming together to speak out and yes, organize, march, fight against what is happening to medical care in this country. I truly believe after WWII, everybody in the middle and upper class became too damned comfortable and materialistic. This includes my family and myself. I am extremely fortunate to have lived through the years when, I believe, America was at its best. Now that I am a Senior citizen, I am happy to be as old as I am. And I know, even though I spent my life taking care of others, that the safety net will be gone when I need it the most. I am smart enough to know that I don’t deserve a medal for my choices, but I never expected things to deteriorate so quickly. Perhaps I was as naive, ignorant, and selfish as my fellow citizens. My eyes are open now. And I do not like a lot of what I see. I am not giving up, I will continue to do what I can at my age, with my health issues, and what assets I have. And I will vote. And continue to follow Truth Matters. Thank you, Leah

At least Pelosi is stepping back. But I have no confidence in Ken Martin. Jeffries needs to find a church for his sermons. Schumer .... argh.
You and I are in the same page Lizzy
The DNC IS the problem. We need to clean house. I watched Ken Martin on MSNBC earlier in the week. I have zero confidence in the man.

Well said!
WE... are the 'leader'.
The more we all realize this, the more our representatives will do what WE want for OUR lives.
You are correct, my job is to break it all down and make coherent suggestions on how to move forward.
While I am not sure that politicians should be paid more, I do think they should have to live with the same conditions that the average US citizen has to live under. Thanks for your input Cliff, this piece is in three parts. One posted yesterday, this one today and a concluding part tomorrow (I hope).
Digest all, then come back to me once you have read all three and I’ll be happy to address any questions.

We need leadership, a charismatic, decent person (James Talarico?) who knows to speak clear and loud for everyone,
without snobby attacks or any kind of negativity. We must win the undecided, independents and some red ones.
I love James Talarico. I think he is one of several young leaders in addition to AOC, Pete Buttigieg, Jasmine Crockett…..
Yes, me too, he is also calm, kind but ferm. Besides he is a religious man, he would attract the Bible Belt. I am not sure how will he resist to the avalanche of slurs from the right but I doubt they can find something to accuse him, unless they lie as they usually do.
It’s a big tent. All voices are important and must be heard if we are going to prevail against authoritarian government.
I concur

Leah, don’t lose faith, I’m actually feeling optimistic for the first time in a while. Read tomorrow’s post and circle back - Martin
I say at this point in time - Schumer out AOC in.She will lead this country out of this s***. SHE HAS A HUGE FOLLOWING.
She’s certainly a contender in my book.
