People say Trump is the gift that keeps on giving to people like me, but I have to tell you that I'd be more than happy to take a break from the madness if he could have a day off.
The mainstream media is worthless. I’m so glad that we have such dedicated independent investigative journalists. I frequently share what I learn with family and friends but I sound like a conspiracy theorist because no one else in my tribe is paying attention. They don’t hear these stories from CBS or NBC so they can’t believe how bad things actually are. We need to wake up the American people before it’s truely too late.
I fault Republicans who could stop this, mostly members of Congress, more than anyone. We could impeach the guy if it wasn't for these pieces of shit. He could be gone in short order.
They should have impeached and convicted after January 6th. Mitch McConnell let down the whole country and he has been living with that failure ever since
Thanks , very insightful about what we don't get else where. I learn what's really going on from your column, its nice to get the truth instead of all the fluff and tabloid garbage.
Trump has always been a grifter , snake oil salesman and a liar…. Oh and a pedophile ….. And he will never change because that’s all he knows … so don’t hold your breath for any change … what you see - is - all there is . And empty vessel … hoping for anything more is self delusional. And dementia is taking a toll at this point … anyone who has witnessed “sun downing “ or the slow fade of an elderly parent can see the signs … and the nuclear codes ??? Are they in Steven Millers control ? Lord help us . 😳 But I blame the Congressional Republicans… 100% . They can solve this … but men with no courage , men of self preservation, men who seek power over justice , wealth over justice and
re election over duty … are never going to save us … cowards all .
Martin, I find all of your posts insightful and informative. Your perspective of our country and its relationship to world order and politics gives me much to ponder each day. I often share your articles. Please know that your knowledge and story telling skills are greatly appreciated!
That’s very kind of you to say Carol, I appreciate it. Politics can appear complex on the surface, but historical context can help bring it alive I think, if told with a sprinkle of good humour and good old British sarcasm.
I’ve been reading “Hunting the Falcon”, an exhaustive study of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. As a putative leader/ruler of a country, Trump could be the reincarnation of that king: demanding total loyalty, obsessed with flattery, persecuting anyone he sees as his enemy. It’s astonishing. And corrupt and evil to the core. The difference is in parental issues. Trump has daddy issues. Henry had mommy issues. Both had neither conscience nor moral core.
You are absolutely correct Elizabeth, Henry VIII is a very apt comparison and it’s actually one I’ve used to describe Trump before. We understand fudalism here and the rich tapestry of history we inherit is both fascinating and terrifying all at the same time. I’m a student of history and I have found it often essential in presenting my case to provide reference points.
it’s why Trump’s threats towards Europe are in many ways amusing. He is now directly responsible for waking up the German war machine after decades of slumber without any idea of what he’s done.
Europe holds almost 30% of US debt, they could send the US into recession in an instant. Of course that would damage Europe too, but the biggest threat would be a bilateral alliance with China and he should not doubt that that option is off the table. If that happened then the US dollar as the global reserve currency would be under real threat.
Thank you, Mr. McSweeney, for always writing eloquent and topical screeds. Yours is one of the first posts that I pick out of my email each day, because it does hit the points perfectly!
I don't know why we haven't been getting more comparisons w/ Mad King George and Mad King Donald. Your realism is appreciated.
Wish I could contribute, but it's not possible at the moment. Maybe later?
No THANK YOU for your support. I’m Martin by the way. Nice to meet you. Please never worry about feeling in any way obliged to become a paid subscriber. I have a quiet rant each month as I get the bill for all the subscriptions and research services I pay for. 🤣
My work will ALWAYS BE FREE, thanks to the generosity of those who support the publication, we’re in this together to help each other.
Thank you, Martin. It's very much appreciated! I live on very little after mortgage and I have a lot of company out here, as financial inequality soars in the US.
I did mean my compliments. Your writing is a cut above the rest and so very topical. I hope that many more readers can discover your work in the coming months. We must thank your generous supporters too!
And yes, those subscriptions you mentioned can get out of hand, can't they? Stacks upon stacks of reading material . . .😉
He has no right to that 747. He didn't pay for it, we're paying for the necessary upgrades, and it belongs to us by law after he leaves office. Hopefully he'll do that feet first so it becomes a dead issue.
Wow your father deserves the ‘Well done’ Christine. His generation made the sacrifices that allow us to engage in this existential fight for the preservation of the bravery of him and his comrades.
Yes. And as a longtime student of Shakespeare, I have often thought these times most closely resemble the play, Macbeth. First Witch. “When shall we three
meet again
In thunder, lightning, or in rain?”
Second Witch. “When the hurlyburly’s done, when the battle’s lost and won.
Third Witch. “That will be ere the set of sun. ……..
Trump learned all his crafty ways to cash in at the same trough as Epstein. Now we need to say “Can’t Buy It!“ - say it louder and stronger than we said “No Kings”!
It is definitely what I want to hear, Martin! The whole ugly, unvarnished truth, although it also scares the crap out of me! I just don’t know what I can do to protect myself or those whom I love.
He’s the cash cow his family is going to milk as long as he stays in office. Doubt they’ll do anything that would endanger his seat in the Oval Office.
That Rubio quote is hi-larious. Trump may not be a real Republican, but from where I’m sitting, Marco, he might as well be, because they largely followed him and cheered him on. It’s just that the Republicans party started showing their true agenda more blatantly.
very informative and I am very glad to find out the truth about Venezuela.
Thank you Monica, appreciate that.
I think of Trump as more of a plague that keeps on infecting than as a gift of any kind. Potaytoh, potahto I guess.
And when I first glanced at the notification on my phone, I thought it said that ‘trump is the grift that keeps on grifting’
🤣🤣
A very understandable reading on your part. 😌

It’s a steep hill to climb my friend.

He should be very careful what he wishes for.

Awesome Post, Martin. “Well done”, as my WWII father, a “lucky bastard” B-17 pilot would say, proudly. ♥️

Hover through the fog and filthy air.”
I’d be happier if trump had the rest of his lifetime off

If DJT was my father I would be beginning to seek help for him. He has lost the script and needs his family need to have an intervention.
