You are right that we need to be asking what is next. The 2 or 3 organizations that planned the NO Kings Days have our emails. Indivisible, 50501 and MoveOn should keep the pressure on. We need to act again sooner than later, not in another march, but in some kind of economic protest. I see people suggesting a certain day of the week that we spend nothing, online or in person. Others are calling for no purchases during the Black Friday sales. I don't favor that as much because too many of us are in need of bargains if we are ever going to have a decent Christmas. What we don't have time to wait months for the energy to gather for an even larger demonstration. Should we be organizing a general strike or some kind of economic protest? How do these become shouts from all the organizations uniting to lead us? I have protested weekly for months. Saturday was very satisfying, but this momentum needs to be seized and catapulted even higher.
I hate to say it, but Christmas for many will be bleak anyway. Also, Christmas is not about the material goods we exchange. It's supposed to be about joy to the world and caring for each other. A black Friday boycott would speak volumes, but it has to be NOW. If we don't take this opportunity, next Christmas we will have no choice - all our "wealth" will be gone. They're coming for everyone who isn't "them". Most of us will be broke and unemployed by this time next year anyway, probably dealing with health issues we cant afford to address. Now, this black Friday week, is the perfect time for an economic boycott. It's really the ONLY time. Retailers count on our holiday dollars to make their end-of-year projections. We should withhold our money while its still ours. Broke people boycotting doesn't make an impact. Only people who currently have the ability to buy and DON'T will send the message. When my most precious niece was little, the first question I asked her every Christmas was "What did you GIVE this year?" It was never "What did you get?" We are not helpless consumers. We should be thoughtful consumers. And those who displeased us should know it by the absence of our money.
We need to hit the billionaires where it hurts and stand solidly behind our collective rage. Boycotts are such a simple way to affect the supporters of this regime. No Transaction Tuesdays is being talked about. No Amazon, Target, stay off TikTik and Insta, don't use your cellphone if you have T-Mobil. Buy from small businesses, support neighborhood restaurants, go to farm stands or weekly Farmers markets on Tuesdays. Just simple but we need this to go national and the major organizations are best suited for getting the word out. I've tried to write them and I'm sure they are existed after their efforts for No Kings, but we need their help on this next step. No time to waste.
I so agree with this. This regime doesn't give a flyingf--k about people protesting in the streets. We need to hit them where it hurts and that is in their profits. Boycott, boycott, boycott. Keep your hard earned money. Stop buying crap from billionaires!
It’s working pretty well for us in 🇨🇦, though I remain concerned about most of Alberta & Saskatchewan, and the still significant number of my compatriots still travelling to the USA.
Seriously, you can bet online if Vegas is your jam, and there’s no price low enough to be spending 🇨🇦 money at Disney (or in Florida, honestly).
A ~1/3 drop in 🇨🇦 business for most things is nevertheless hurting most significantly the people who profit off the work of others, but at least another 1/3 should be easily achievable.
Regardless, starving the machine that feeds your tyranny is the only way most folks can help bring back your democracy.
That, and being fully prepared for when (not if) Trump & co escalate further:
I strongly encourage every North American & Greenlander to familiarize themselves, and those who they care about, with the OSS/CIA Field Guide for Simple Sabotage
The author did not say it was a failure! But he/she is correct. Where do we go from here? I think another rally before Christmas and let’s try to get 2 to 3,000,000 more people to come out. And boycotts! They have to be coordinated and all of us have to be on board. Look what happened when everyone canceled their Disney subscriptions, including my own daughters! We must stay together, we must be strong, and we must be determined. Ezra Levin is meeting with the indivisible people and their decisions have been spot on. This is a scary time for all of us.
Please, everyone, stay focused and hopeful. And remember, from part of a quote my daughter sent me: “Hope is not made of whispers. Hope has dirt on its face.”
We are not terrorists, we are patriots who love our country and all the freedoms maybe we have taken for granted over the years.
Hello Linda, I’m Martin, thank you for your valuable contribution to the conversation. The sooner it’s recognised I’m not the enemy, but a voice advocating smart campaigning.
Keep shining the light on apparent lack of strategy, let alone ruthless, we MUST win strategic resources. Organizing is hard and we Democrats are like herding cats. But over my 70+years the strongest connecting tissues have centered on strength, safety, free, fair, share. A place to live, food to eat and share the collective burden of keeping each other healthy. As this wealth gap widens we have untapped support from pissed off, broken down folks that just want a voice, and not feel shaken down by every lying politician. P.S. you don't have to keep apologizing to the few that feel aggrieved. Democrats learned the word "discernment" in public school. And if they didn't. they'll come around when they wake the fuck up
Lisa, the question is not whether the older generation Democratic leaders have earned their stripes or not. The question is whether they can still be credible leaders in today's situation. As Martin has written several times, the Democratic Party has no vision, no mission statement, no experience anchored in the real lives of its target audience. It is unable to empathise with the voters it so desperately lacks, to understand their real needs, their hardships, their fears. When addressing the working population, the Dem leaders look past their heads and see only people like themselves: middle to upper class, secure jobs, secure housing, secure pensions... How can such people be capable of winning the votes of the working class?
YES! YES! YES! 100% agree! The protest was fantastic! Although I know plenty of people who HATE what’s going on with this regime, but still wouldn’t march because they’re afraid for their jobs, or their fragile emotions simply couldn’t handle time dedicated to a protest. I don’t get that AT ALL. Fragile emotions will handle what’s to come even less, if something doesn’t change. Nonetheless, the protests should be the starting point. The lack of leadership is befuddling, but I get that many dem leaders are simply chasing their tails putting out fires and raising money to try and get elected. But I’ve watched enough debates with strong dem candidates, and they often have no strong retort for the other team who plays dirty at every turn. They think “taking the higher moral ground” and ignoring the ugly comments is the way to go… but with this social media quagmire, you only have a few seconds, if that, to make your point, and you’re making no points shutting up and letting the lying loudmouths talk over you. That’s not the world we live in right now. Not just ONE, but a TEAM of hard-hitting debaters needs to UNIFY NOW! I’ve mailed and emailed several members of the dems and independents urging them to please do so! — To get together and whittle the fight down to five or ten solid points and speak together to all of us about them—let us know what we can ALL DO TOGETHER to fight this corrupt takeover. Screw party lines and individual goal-setting. We’re at the eleventh hour people! Drop your clutch-purses and put on your boxing gloves! (Buttigieg, Booker, Talarico, AOC, Sanders, Newsom, Crockett, Warren… to name a few—you have received communications from me! I will send more!) We just need a few leaders who are willing to beat their chests TOGETHER, and be LOUDER than those evil players who are doing so now. JUST GET LOUD!!
Thank you for taking the time and effort to contribute to the conversation. People need to understand I’m not the enemy, I’m the voice of reason and strategic empowerment.
Agree, don’t be afraid to join! I am still riding the joyful high of Saturday, laughing and cheering amongst hundreds of my neighbors. We had a smaller protest than the huge one downtown but we “took the bridge” over Mission Bay on a glorious sunny day of freedom!
Agree 100% with this, about the Democrats: "My gut feeling, however, is that they are not committed to a people-first agenda, but rather to their own donor class’s agenda. Somebody has to say it, so it might as well be me."
Thank you, Martin for your perspectives on the truth. They are congruent with mine and provided me with a clearer understanding of the Democrats' inadequacies. That is sad and troubling.
Though my faith in our democracy is sometimes weakened, I do believe, based on my 80+ years, that there are forces (voices), now including yours, that are growing and gradually a course correction will be apparent. Unfortunately, it looks like the silent majority needs to be convinced of the gravity of the current situation for substantial change to be set firmly in motion. Hopefully, the process will shift before a modern civil war happens!
The peaceful marches this past weekend bode well for this. The one I was at, in Catonsville, MD, was reminiscent of the 60s, with pockets of delicious spirit fostered by someone broadcasting, "We shall over come!" . . . and the people were singing along with it.
Also, it is noteworthy that there was no violence, the police were in view on a nearby hill, and I did not see anyone drive by giving us the finger. There was a lot of that at the 1st No Kings march in
Annapolis. So, these in addition to the greater numbers and increased varieties of people are evidence of some encouraging developments.
One final comment. You are spot on with the recommendation that people engage one another in "conversations" to understand one another. That is an essential ingredient for re-uniting the country in support of democracy. We have to come together, with our differences, for the common goal of democracy. I am a retired psychologist and accustomed to having difficult conversations. Yet, I have been humbled by how difficult it was for me to broach the subject with the person who cuts my hair. We've developed a good rapport over many years. She's strongly in favor of Trump's policies. I had to really push myself to initiate the conversation, a week ago. One factor that helped the conversation go well is that we are both invested in having a good relationship while acknowledging our differences.
Democrats won nearly all the special elections this year. It's not a matter of disagreement. a fact. fact. At least one election flipped from red to blue. That's a fact.
You are not screaming in a void, many people realize that the Democrats need to strategize and change. Too long held on to the message of just being the alternative to Trump!
I was heartened by the amount of people who mobilized for the No Kings protests. I watched an interview with Ezra Levin yesterday and he encouraged people to get on their “next steps” call on Tuesday evening. He discussed economic boycotts as well, especially to hurt the tech broligarchs who literally do not care about humanity. So get on their call y’all!
Additionally, I agree with how rudderless the Dems are right now. Chuck Schumer needs to step down as well as Hakeem Jeffries. We need more populists whom regular people can relate to, like Graham Platner. I have decided to cancel Spotify this week because they run horrendous DHS ads on their platform. Instead, I can send this money to Platner’s campaign. These are the things We the People need to do en masse.
Just one example of how out of touch the DNC is: Here in Maine we have a superb candidate to replace Susan Collins. Graham Platner has a vision for progressive policies and a winning personality. But our great governor, Janet Mills, decided to run as well, with the machinery of the DNC behind her. I can tell you this announcement caused a collective groan across our state. I had already sent her an email advising her to enjoy her well deserved retirement, and NOT to run, because we need Graham. Even after she announced, I sent her a message saying it’s not too late to back out.
This is only one state that they are f€£¥ing up, but it’s significant! Getting rid of Collins would be a huge win. She’s not well liked here (or anywhere). But the DNC could give Collins yet another term, as they did in the past.
So sick of democrats snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Please don’t get me started on this one Graham Platner is the future model of where the DNC should be looking, not going to war with him. It’s political suicide.
Get rid of the current DNC and instead of writing postcards and letters - instead look at "Marketing Plans" from the young influencers commercial advertisers >>>
I completely agree. There is an opportunity for democrats to push a new agenda government of the people for the people but they need to get the by the people b/c they are not getting behind the new democratic faces that need solid support. Those new faces need help yes but come up with the “ this is what we will be as democrats moving forward with a plan” and have it led by the newer democrats they should be support. It’s hard to get behind the same old same old and trust they will actually get anything done. For people to believe it’s a new vision and a New Democratic Party there has to be new democratic politicians. They keep shooting themselves in the foot when they don’t ALL get behind Mamdani, Platner and others. On Boycotting -ABSOLUTELY

Michael, thank you so much for your important and detailed contribution to the conversation.
I remain optimistic despite my sometimes evident frustration, because I still believe that 32 % of eligible voters does not a king make.
Dems have to tap into the 30% that have walked away from the process and I believe they can do that with a more people focused proposition.
Martin

Agreed! Thanks so much for your support.
I have no notes Kim, you’re on the money
Every word you speak is spot on Dems are running on "we're the only hope you've got and not an Agenda for political change, for prosperity, equality for all and for peace" and that is the attitude that lost us the 24 election; by ignoring the voice of the ppl ❤ and sticking with the status quo.
Glad we are on the same page
Momentum.... It is undeniable that the movement has it right now. But, you're correct. It needs to feed into the next initiative and then continue on from there to be effective. A one-and-done approach will eventually get lost in the successive news cycles.
I hope that there's further programming ahead and that my Party (big D) will lead the charge.
You’ll get no pushback from me
Thank you for saying what you say. You are 100% correct. The Democratic Party in its current form is unpalatable. People only vote for Dems because voting for tRump leaves a worse taste in their mouths. I know the "old guard" are afraid that if they give voice to the progressives, then they themselves become irrelevant. But they have already made themselves irrelevant in their refusal to stand up for the American people. They have become so comfortable taking money from their corporate donors they forgot what and WHO they are supposed to stand for. You are not screaming into the void. I hear you. ❤️
Thank you Leslie, good to know I’m not banging my head against the wall.
I don’t think there has ever been a time in modern U.S. history to adopt a more progressive approach. There’s clearly an appetite amongst the public. Leadership is just choosing to ignore it.
Trump’s machine is formidable and Dems need to start taking them seriously.
