Sometimes it's exhausting and it's difficult to see the wood for the trees amidst a tsunami of disinformation and misdirection. I hope today you'll indulge me to share a few personal thoughts?
"Woke," when aligned with empathy and compassion, is defined by many as being aware of social, racial, and political injustices, aimed at fostering a more caring, inclusive, and equitable world. It emphasizes understanding the human behind every story, listening deeply, and actively working to alleviate suffering.
• Awareness & Action: Originally rooted in awareness of racial injustice, "woke" has evolved to represent a broader consciousness of marginalized groups and systemic inequalities.
• Empathy as Strength: Proponents argue that empathy—feeling the pain of others—is not weakness, but rather a strength that guides a desire for a fairer society.
• Compassion in Action: While empathy is feeling the suffering, compassion is the desire to relieve it, and kindness is the action taken to do so. Supporters see this mindset as leading with love and humanity.
Ultimately, being "woke" is a conscious, ongoing effort to recognize one's own biases and to care for the well-being of all people, regardless of their background.
Now, who could possibly oppose such a beneficent course of action? Possibly only those who are filled with anger, hatred, jealousy, envy, paranoia and ignorance.
You recently ran the math of superimposing the tax, social services, education, and healthcare system of Norway over that of the US to show the positive effects of eliminating the FatCat middle men at the top of insurance companies making $20 million (or more... EACH, and there are at least 6 to 10!?) Then there are the FatCat millionaires (billionaires) at the top of medical provider companies, hospital associations, etc.
As the Dark Side LOVES to scream SOCIALISM! or worse COMMUNISM!
I believe it is critical to have copious examples of countries who are clearly Capitalist with Boundaries... Which is what the US has been working toward until fascist authoritarian oligarchy took over and has done their best to put an end to Government of the People, by the People, for the People.
So, if you could, would, please consider doing the same using England, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, Australia, Canada.
I don't even know enough about how these countries are organized or how well their higher education systems work or how well their health care systems work, but I am convinced they are basically capitalist based, have better social safety net systems, and our systems are the most inefficient and ineffective in the developed world.
I beleive this will be helpful for progressive candidates and for our newly elected House and Senate.
Wow...we don't know what others go through in life. It is so easy to judge others rather than look to see what and who they are. I have to say, I like your posts. I have unsubscribed to a number of people as it gets overwhelming to dwell on what is happening too long every day. Your post however, always seem to have relevance to to me and I even have a few that I have saved for reference. Keep up the good work and thank you for what you do. Good luck with the gardening. I love being out in nature too. It is very healing.
Some of what you have expressed in this post resonates with me and it’s very close to home.
Life puts us in extreme situations that sometimes show us what we are made of and, for Better or for worse, become the path we se on to conquer or fail. Your family is very lucky to have you, and you are very blessed to have people who love and support you around you.
Thank you for opening a window into the journey that has led to your very profound and truthful articles. Thanks for having chosen the path you chose at an impossible moment.
I’ll be drinking a small glass to life on your behalf, to health, to the continuing determination to join the fight for a world our children and grandchildren may be able to live in as productive, honest and prosperous individuals.
Never let up. I always look forward to your next post.
Absolutely love this personal story and how your life journey has made you who you are today . You have gone through many challenges and blessings , been a rich man and had to fight through hard times…. And yet I don’t hear any bitterness or regrets . Somehow we rise up … whether by one strangers act of kindness or just sheer determination to win one more battle that life throws at us . Introspection is enlightenment. Suffering builds strength . Struggling makes you persevere in your path forward .
When years ago my husband faced several legal business issues that were very difficult, a wise man said to me “ That which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger “ . We were facing economic ruin and possibly further penalties . But we survived and went on to build a business far more successful than I had ever imagined- in spite of competitors who had tried to take down our business.
I truly believe that adversity is a pillar of wisdom and mental strength. It certainly has made me stronger than I ever imagined I could be .
And like you , I see my garden as a sanctuary. It is a place where I analyze the happiness of my plants , and nurture them with nutrients and sweet encouragement.
You are exactly where you are supposed to be Martin . Writing about the things that are so crucial to life on this earth . Integrity, ethics , honesty, empathy, respect , compassion and humanity- all the basic principles of a life of fulfillment. Truth Matters . March onwards 🙏🏼🫶🏻🌸.
Thank you as ever Bonnie, there is no bitterness, I was angry that I was kicked when I was down only to find I was the victim of a bank that knew it was acting in bad faith and did nothing to remedy an error that placed me in financial distress only to admit it when it was too late.
I’m a pragmatist Bonnie, my despair was a rare moment of weakness, but I’m stronger for having survived. I’m content with my lot and I love what I do now, so that’s a win - Martin
Thank you Martin, and much gratitude to that young woman who pulled you back from the precipe. One can never know how the simplest action will ripple out into the world, for good or for bad. So we strive for the good and the kindness, as hard as it sometimes can be.
I guess we can thank TrumPEDO for unifying most Americans on several issues, like no more wars, especially in the Middle East, or data centers. Although I think it is a bit hypocritical of people to continue to use AI, yet not want a data center in their backyard. Does this mean, if they are built in communities of poverty, they would be ok with it?
We have similar ends but different means. You are seeking to inform, and through being informed, people will wake up and claim their agency. I am seeking to train people to use their brains so that they can wake up and claim their agency.
Between us, maybe we will be successful.. Thank you.
The same way Power and Wealth unveils the character of one individual a tsunami of events or a fire that are likely meant to break you are only stressing the material someone is built from
I love the way you have overcame the hardship and the storm and, the fact that you are here today is proof of your strong character and gentle humanity that you love to share with us once in a while
Thank you for your most kind words Roxana, I share these snippets for no other reason than to say I have genuinely been there when it comes to struggling both mentally and economically, as I know many others have.
My hope is that if I can share my experience it may help people understand who I am and why I do what I do here. It goes to the very heart of the values I share with so many who read what I write.
You’re lucky indeed if you go through life without facing challenges. It’s not a crime or a sign of weakness to sometimes accept the help of others. Despair can be overwhelming and that’s why we need to be alert to the danger signs. It’s certainly something I try to do following my experience. - Martin
I appreciate your coming clean with us readers. So I’ll come clean with you. I share some of your story.
Blue collar from chicaago, no schooling. Worked since I was 15.
Alcoholic parents, etc.
what saved me was reading and travel. In the 60s n 70s reading psychology books was fashionable,
( along with a variety of substances that were said to expand one’s consciousness). Reading psychology led to reading philosophy which led to reading books by or about various spiritual teachers and various spiritual traditions. I mention the above for two reasons. 1. To acknowledge a kinship with you based on shared early life experiences, and 2. To encourage you to turn your attention to solutions guided by higher spiritual wisdom.
Yes, things are looking not just bleak in the material world but dangerous as well. Between global warming and powerful human egos running the show it’s difficult to see light at the end of the political, social morass we are all somehow responsible for, either by our collective doings or collective not doings. Being ‘ bug phobic ‘ gardening, although attractive is not something I think much about.
What I do think about is transcending my attachments to being right, or making others wrong. Speak ( write ) your opinions, most of which I agree with, then trust your highest moral and spiritual nature and forget about results.
Woke is a good thing

Say it loud,
I’m woke
And I’m proud!
THEY should try it.
I have never really understood what "woke" really means. You spell it out perfectly and I am loud and proudly WOKE!
Hi Martin,
You are right on track and very much appreciated!
Enjoy the well earned day off!

I’ll certainly take a look at your suggestion Jon, it’s primarily the Nordic countries that deliver socially responsible capitalism.
The UK sadly virtually mirrors the US greed model. - Martin

The "win" is the best ever. You have survived and are not alone in doing so. I, as many here, appreciate your style of writing the truth.

Your writing has helped me so much the last year. Thank you. Could you please convert 2.5 stone for us stateside 🤣
Thank you for your very kind words Lucy. 2.5 stone is 15.86 kg or 35 lbs
Oh wow! Good work!
Martin, you are a “solid “Human Being ! Your climb in life experiences have built empathy, strength, and a willingness to help others.
Thank You for all you do .
Thank you. You are most welcome Thomas
