The sovereign debt trap, a shadow liquidity crisis, and shrinking demand for the US dollar. All it needs to trigger and economic extinction event is a substantive economic shock.
Once again I see the phrase "the most powerful military on the planet." I beg to differ. Martin is correct in saying that despite the sacrifice of line officers, men, and women, the U. S. has not won a war since 1945. Complicated, hugely expensive machines are no match for dedicated guerrilla armies, suicide bombers, and assymetric arms like drones. The AF can flatten great swaths of land (see Gaza), but the humans who survive emerge, mostly, radicalized at best. One can argue that the only thing war begets is more war, not to mention misery and generational animosity. History proves that humans never learn the lessons of armed conflict.
Didn't President Eisenhower in his farewell address warn us about the militarized-industrial complex. Wars only keep this country entrenched with those institutions whose sole purpose is to profit from them and they are never held accountable for the destruction left in their wake nor the hundreds/thousands of lives lost. We have learned nothing since WWII.
You should also look at the side effects of Trumpβs madness because Iran wants to toll the Strait of Hormuz. The US and Canada toll the St Lawrence River. Egypt charges tolls on the Suez Canal. Panama charges tolls on the Panama Canal
Why can't Iran charge tolls on the Strait of Hormuz? Payments can be in cash, crypto or barter. No joke. They need the $$ to fund the war so they can defend themselves
Stand at the edge of the Grand Canyon and you are overwhelmed by the grandeur, the sheer volume of space that speaks to beauty, time, and forces that make it so special. Any of the top ten best places to visit give you the same feeling of pride of place and overwhelming excitement thinking of what it took to create the world we live in and yearn to see. All this is to emphasize what will be lost if Trump and his minions continue on their path to power. Trump isnβt just risking the lives of human beings but also where they live and work, worship and adore. Bombing, exploding, and destroying whatever and wherever in Iran will occur in the US. Donβt doubt it, expect it.
The casualties will come. Our lives will never be the same. No amount of gold and no amount of money will protect us. None of it will be important. Hate, hubris, and arrogance will destroy us. The Grand Canyon, the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, etc. will not bring tears to our eyes. We will never see them again.
This is a very profound statement Douglas. Some of which I share, but I donβt think itβs over yet. The burning question is how long it will take to repair the catastrophic damage caused. - Martin
Sadly Douglas the warmongering fool in the White House has also damaged World heritage sites in Iran as has his buddy Netanyahu. But then Trump has no concept of beauty or ancient heritage the man is consumed with gold metal paint instead of historical sites. With regards to the wondrous beauty of nature heβs hell bent on being the one whoβll go down in history ( if we all live that long ) as being the most disastrous environmentalist ever.
We, the average citizens of America are the onesβs that will suffer from this mad childβs horrific doings. Yes, everyone needs to turn out on 3/28/26 for the NO KINGS RALLY in your local hometown. The life you have now is at a huge risk of disappearing, your retirement, your savings, your income, your property values, your FREEDOM.
Regardless of your political party, wake up, get off the couch. Get involved in a safe, family oriented rally on 3/28/2026.
Tragically itβs too little too late Patricia although it serves a purpose re folk feeling that they are doing something anything I guess. Also if Iβm honest Iβm now wondering this could a King cause this much global pain ? Here in UK I somehow think not !!! and Iβm not particularly a monarchist!
Iβve been making the same assessments for some time now. Economically we will be in Great Depression territory, though worse. Having made enemies all over the planet, we will also become targets for revenge. The BRICS coalition will move forward as the USD loses its grip inside world economics, and America will fall to third-world standards. Project 2025/2026 will be the least of our concerns.
This truly made my head hurt trying to comprehend all of the details you provided. In the end, only a fool would believe that a man that sank 6 casinos, would not in turn sink the United States!!! Thank you for your hard work!
I love reading your posts Martin as you more often than not put, with such eloquence, the case for us all to wake the hell up ! I too wake up every morning thinking what madness will today bring..
We have a mentally deranged sociopath freak parading as the one person maybe even more than Putin or Netanyahu that the world will really bear feared by. Now if anyone had uttered those words to us a few years ago we would have thought them equally deranged. When I listen to some of our top Generals here in UK spelling out to us mere onlookers just how misguided Trumps β regime β change stunts are. The danger to the world order in every possible guise is unimaginable. To quote β I had stirred up a hornet's nest and should be prepared for the sting β unfortunately a sting is the very least of our worries. Keep going though Martin while we all try to stay sane !
Thanks for your comment Elizabeth. Donβt misread my post, Iβm not being defeatist, I genuinely donβt want to play these silly games. I simply donβt want to engage with a story that will change 5 times before I get to the end.
Iβd rather focus on a tangible known and this Greater Israel project is an existential threat to the whole region and Israel will NOT want to stop this war now for negotiations.
Trump is playing for time, but facts are scarce, so I canβt in all good conscience engage without facts. It seems odd to me that Trumpβs five days takes us to the end of the trading week.
I have plenty to do with my time that can contribute value to the broader conversation. - Martin
Oh Martin youβre definitely not a defeatist and so valid a point re the end of a trading week ! Dear god itβs all such a horror game that heβs playing.
Good article. My one criticism is that time and again REPUBLICANS have entered us into wars we cannot win. Not "our government" the REPUBLICANS in our government. It is high time we reined in the presidency and returned declarations of war where they belong - in Congress under debate. And also time to find and politically punish those who keep pushing otherwise. Those are the dangers to us and to the world.
"Iβll conclude today by reiterating that America faces the dangerous trinity of the sovereign debt trap, a shadow liquidity crisis, and shrinking demand for the dollar."
I am woke enough to see how bad things are, but as an intelligent person who just wants myself and others to live their lives with dignity and a government BY the People and FOR the People, I will have to look up the articles that explain shadow liquidity and sovereign debt trap so I can better understand these concepts.
The problem is, itβs no easy to explain in simple terms because everything about it is designed to be beyond understanding. Itβs all about using debt as collateral for stock market gambling in search of bigger returns.
You should also lookup the private debt crisis too which is increasingly becoming a problem. Itβs like a perfect debt storm.
Let me know if you have any questions as you research. There are some links in the piece that might help too.
As the board member for a consumer credit counseling service I have visibility into consumer debt status on a monthly basis. You know when the last time consumer debt to income was this high? 2008. You know what happened just before 2008. Bank deregulation {by - surprise - republicans} and a housing market crash. It's not gonna take much to push us over into 2008 style economy collapse territory again. It's more a question of which straw will break the camels back this time.
PS the Republicans are already itching for bank deregulation literally as we speak ....
And then. Guess what. The Republicans will a) blame the crash on Democrats. B) let the Democrats dig the country out of the recession again. C) spend the entire time blaming the debt and inflation they caused on the Democrats yet again. D) win another set of elections and trash everything again once the economy has recovered while cashing in again. Because E) people never seem to learn from history. Ever. They just listen to talking heads and nod and agree.
The one thing the US protests hasn't done is demanded a leadership change now as others before us who faced a dictator putting forth policy for their own interest. They weren't building solidarity, they were demanding a change of leadership. The solidarity was evident by the large numbers demanding a specific action.
I for one am over wars. I get WWII. But now feel we & Israel are the bad guys and it's hard to come to terms with bcz I love my country.
But Im so very disappointed in it, or atleast the ones kneeling and just handing over all our freedoms to an unstable govt.
It worries me other countries will feel they need to come after us bcz Trump & Co are so out of control. Our allies are dropping off. Countries we've worked with and fostered good faith with for so long.
All bcz of a mentally ill group of ppl. Greedy ppl that only see what they can gain in money & power.
It's disheartening and not a world I want to leave behind for my kids and grandkids.
In the 21 st century, there should be no place for war where diplomacy exits. Unfortunately, there are ppl who foster hate, bigotry, violence, corruption and only support their egocentric agenda. They are the outliers who want to be seen and control the narrative. They only trust those that blindly follow their lead out of fear.
The good news for us, we are in the majority! But we cannot rest on our fannies! We must be proactive and united in pushing back via our numerous prodemocracy, grassroots, and neighborhood organizations. We must act w/courage as our Minnesotan sisters and brothers have when faced w/ evil. Each of us needs to do our part peacefully, w/determination and wisdom to secure our countryβs future! Come how you can: in a car w/a loud horn; on the streets waving signs, flags, banners; and/or in costume on March 28th, No Kings 3, as we show the world who and what we support!!
I couldnt agree more! We all just want to live and be happy. It's the greedy ppl that ruin it for rest of us. The ppl that think only "They" matter & if it's not actively affecting them it wont. WRONG
