Oh and add a generous helping of affordability to that. There's no need to fight fascism and go to war with this lunatic regime, simply stay focussed on affordability, the fascism will fall naturally.
You’re wondering why the American people would vote for a pathological liar who stole from his own charity and perpetually evaded paying his taxes while employing hundreds of the very immigrants on low wages he now wants to mass deport. All while stiffing contractors and students at his fake university, yet the American people voted for him TWICE.
Racism and white supremacy is the reason why Trump was elected in 2020 and again in 2024. The Trump presidency is the white backlash to the Obama presidency. MAGA is deathly afraid of becoming a minority due to demographic change. It’s not like minorities are treated badly here, are they? #Sarcasm
A significant percentage - not a majority but still significant percentage of white people are happy to go without if it means Black and Brown people are hurt worse or hurt period. This became obvious during Covid when conservatives called to open up the country when it was learned Black and Brown people were disproportionately affected by Covid because they had jobs that required in person work. The same principle applies to a general strike and an economic boycott.
I fear a very similar movement emerging in Australia. Lots of social media ranting about how immigrants are responsible for everything that is wrong in our lives .... housing, employment and general affordability. It's extremely frustrating hearing these views promoted with no evidence at all and anyone who feels slightly hard done by, jumps on the band wagon. It seems that logic and common sense is disappearing from our society and that is another reason why we need people like you Martin. ..that and the fact that I adore your writing style.
On another note, have you ever considered writing your life story? From the little I have read here, I think it would be an extremely interesting read. I would buy it 😊
Thankfully, this election round is rousing a generation of 30-40 year olds like never before. To be frank, the majority of this age group are accustomed to working between 50-70 hours a week, here in the US. Politics is not a high priority because they’re so busy trying to raise families and tread water. They hung on trust and faith in the system.
Now, that’s been obliterated. Affordability has invaded every aspect of their lives. We have criminal lunatics in the WH. Hopefully the blue wave will finally be monstrous.
My immediate overall impression of this commentary is that the US, and Americans, in general, are far more diverse and difficult to pigeonhole than one might imagine. We aren’t this or that. We aren’t. At this point those that have stubbornly followed Trump with heartbreaking devotion, hatred of those that see otherwise…almost never can be persuaded to accept any other view. They get their news and opinions from propaganda sources that tell them what they want to believe. They have their opinions and are passionate about them. There are many who see things differently, but have many diverse opinions about what to do with those opinions. Some are spread among and between people who have no opinion.., and don’t want to engage in politics at all… they just want to raise their family, survive another day, have fun, maybe get through the illness that plagues them, or whatever personal dilemma occupies their present life. And the U.S. is very big.., it takes 12-14 hours to drive from one end of California to the other. That is one state out of 50… the size of England and Scotland together, lengthwise maybe. France 🇫🇷 ? My point being, we are extremely diverse, and joining together for anything is a momentous proposition. With different news sources, different information, different influences…. Different cultural impact. And yet we are ONE NATION. For 250 years. No matter what it seems like, no matter how desperate the situation … it’s not lost. We are not going anywhere, and just like in history… the Evil always fail in the long run. I believe this. Firmly.
I’m not sure I said anything was lost, I’m just struggling to understand why people would want to make it more difficult than it needs to be.
One could argue that politics is the last thing on anyone’s mind until it isn’t because it affects them directly. As for cultural differences, I think that’s a lazy argument. We may view things differently in terms of cultural perspectives, but the end result is the same. You either lose democracy or you don’t.
To believe that everything will turn out in the end because others will make it so is incredibly dangerous.
One benefit to the socialist label is that eventually it will force people to open a dictionary. [okay they will use chat 🙄] When we have white men with signs saying get your government hands off my medicare, we seriously need to force a reckoning; while I do not support some of the dsa platform, I have no problem with continued usage of the word and can see some benefit. If people feel so strongly about that word, they can call themselves when their house is on fire.
The problem I believe most people would have using 'workers' is that its too condescending .Its like conceding before you begin. No one (or extremely few) take pride in being just a worker. 'Just' is the key.
As an American it’s hard to read about an Englishman insulting us for being stupid and then telling us what to do because we’re too stupid to figure it out.
I appreciate the factual comparisons of various national budget priorities and economies.

Muy interesante. Lo lee un español desde Madrid y lo encuentra perfectamente adaptable a nuestra realidad cotidiana.

Disagree. The election needs to be about fighting for people, our lives be it economics or civil li stories, not being 3rd way wimps.
Workers' Democracy ... all for a name change

People First Democracy is spot on because it includes ... we are the workers. It would be great if it was an easily identified acronym
